Found this newspaper clipping in Bismarck Daily Tribune 1891

Frankfort IN Nov.8 An epidemic new and dreadful disease has made it's appearance near Kirklin IN. A small town 10 miles south of this city. A few days ago one of the children of John Wyman was attacked with a peculiar disease and in 48 hrs. the child was dead. One after another the children out of this family contracted the disease and died. Wednesday the mother, Mrs. Wyman died. The father and husband is left a raving maniac. Another 7 new cases are reported. The doctors say it is Asiatic black tongue and cannot combat the disease.
note: Thought this might explain the disappearance of some of the people you might be researching.
