Hi WW - I think these 2 links will answer as to what limited info I have on my John Wyatt.

John Wyatt born March 29 1772 - no Buncombe County existed then - it was Tryon County and then became Lincoln and Rutherford counties. Buncombe County is formed from Rutherford. John is often called John Wyatt of Buncombe County. His daughter Zilpha wrote several helpful things about him. Besides the date and place of birth [place questionable] she stated John's father was James Wyatt.
A writer of local history in 1905, who often had some mistakes knew Zilpha and her husband and his brother was married to Zilpha's neice. I mention this because despite his mistakes he did know the Wyatt family. He said John's father [which we know to be James]served 7 years in the Revolutionary War. Zilpha also said her father John left Buncombe to go to Tennessee in 1826, so I know him to be the John Wyatt who sold his land in 1826 that lay at the intersection of Mud and Clear Creeks in Buncombe County NC.

My crude theory is that John's father James may be James Jr of Tryon County. Junior was often used to denote simply someone younger than someone older with the same name. James Jr may be the son of James and Bethleham Wyatt, or perhaps his brother William. There are other Wyatt's in the area also. James Wyatt Sr and wife Bethleham and William Wyatt had come to Tryon County NC traveling some years before from Northumberland County VA. The 3rd brother John did not go with them to NC.
