Johnson , Judson , Jay Winn trivia

I have been reading through some of the old newspaper articles from central NY and came across some about the Winn family, particularly Johnson, Judson and Jay Winn. Johnson Winn has a wife named Sarah Olive Brown and lived in South Bay NY during the 1860's. He had 2 children M Jay (a son) and a daughter named Mary. He ran a hotel in South Bay. In 1863 he was arrested along with his cousin Isaac Winn for the crime of counterfeiting postal currency. The trial took place in 1864 and was quite a sensation! The notorious Winns!! Both were convicted of the crime. Johnson was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in the Albany penitentiary...Isaac got 2 years 6 month in the Rochester Penitentiary. Johnson Winn was later pardoned by the President. Judson Winn had 2 daughters Mae and Frankie.

In 1880 Johnson Winn was crossing the frozen Oneida lake and got his horse stuck in a crack..ran all the way to South Bay for help. The horse survived.

Jay Winn (Johnson's son) didn't fall far from the tree and was arrested for illegal fishing in Oneida lake and was sentence to 6 months in Auburn penitentiary. I guess he had quite a lucrative fish market in Oneida NY.

At one time there were 4 families of Winn's living in close proximity in Madison county (Lenox). Johnson (Sarah), Judson (Cornelia), Simeon (Lucy) and Hiram Winn (Sarah)...I believe that they are all somehow related. But I haven't found the link as yet...I do have hope as someone told me that there are 2 unidentified males on one of the earlier censuses..and I think one of them could be Hiram's father Edward (my ggggrandfather). He is not in any other censuses and I figured he must have died young...Hiram b 1832/33 is living with another family (Lyman Taft in Annsville NY) by the time he is 18 and there are two other young Winn children living with another family in 1860..Harriett Winn b 1845 and Henry Winn b 1843 are living with the Chester Johnson (62) family in Marcy NY...just a stones throw away. To make the mystery even more a mystery..there is an Eliphalet Winn living in Annsville in 1850 with a son Hiram also...so which is my Hiram..LOL??? Is Eliphalet really Edward??? Arg!

Just some trivia to put some meat on the names and dates. It is so interesting finding out how they lived. Even if you do find out they were crooks. Sometimes I think it would be better to not have turned over that particular stone! Hope this helps someone.
