This portrait of Mr. Robert B. Whyte appears on the illustration page facing page 163 of The Canadian Horticulturist, vol.XX, no.5, May, 1897. See that article for more information. Mr. Robert B. Whyte was born at Perth in 1850. His father, J. G. Whyte, came to Canada from Scotland some time prior to that date and was involved in the agriculture industry in the Ottawa Valley. As a boy, Robert B. Whyte was educated in the home. Robert undertook a study of the flora of Ottawa in 1866 and he ended up with a large herbarium. In 1875 Robert purchased his house in the Sandy Hill portion of Ottawa City and he built an impressive garden there. He was very involved in horticulture and fruit growing. He took an active part in the organization of the Ottawa Horticultural Society. He was also an amateur photographer. He was married and had children. That is all the information I have on him.
