Looking for Whiting's in Winchester England that were clockmakers

Hello:

My family has in its possession an old grandfather clock that is probably 250 - 300 years old. It was originally made in Winchester England by a man named R. Whiting. In the 1930's, one of my relatives made a trip to Winchester and found out that there was still a Whiting in the Winchester area who was a clockmaker around 100 years before (circa 1830's, let's say), and was apparently a grandson of the R. Whiting who had made this original clock.

I'm just leaving this inquiry to see if there are any Whitings who might know who the R. Whiting is I am referring to; what years he was alive, and when he was making clocks, so we can get an approximate age of when our clock was made (it uses wooden cogs to run, and has a weight system in it to run the old wooden works).
