Hello, I would like to invite anyone who is interested to join the Whiting/Whitten/Whiton (and other variant spellings) Family Y-DNA project through Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). Through the project you can have your DNA tested at a reduced cost (only $99 for a 12-marker test). You would also be able to contact others in the group who share your DNA haplotype (DNA matches) and compare notes/exchange information. Another goal is to determine which of the many variant surname spellings are related to each other. A longer term goal will be to associate a haplotype with each of the original emigrants to the US. You can join the project at the following link: https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=E93389&special=true Collecting the sample for DNA testing is very simple and painless. The process is to rub the inside of your cheek with a swab (provided by FTDNA), which is then placed in a small vial and sent to FTDNA for analysis. When you join the project and select the appropriate test (12, 25, 37, or 67 markers), FTDNA will send you a test kit, which includes a swab, sample vials, release form, and return envelope. You can either pay FTDNA upfront or request to be billed later. The minimum number of markers is 12, but additional markers provide more information and can more accurately predict how many generations ago the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) between two members lived. Note that the test can only be performed on male DNA (containing the Y chromosome), so if you are not a direct male descendant of the Whitten\Whiting line (or variant spelling) then you will need to recruit a family member who is (your father, brother, uncle, etc.) in order to participate.
