Hello Betty,
This is probably a long shot and no connection, but you remarked about the name Rufus in your family. My Whites came from England to Va then to the Spartanburg and Glenn Springs area of S.C. (the two are very close) to each other. During the War for Southern Independence my great great grandfather John Warren White and three of his four brothers, William, Hiram, Jr., and Rufus White, all members of the Palmetto SharpShooters, S.C. Vols, were all killed during the war. One of these brothers was Rufus Belton White. He died the next day of wounds recieved during the Battle of Fraser's Farm (Glendale), having lost his right arm. He was only like 22. But he was married and left behind a wife and kids, and his descendents still live around the Spartanburg/Glenn Springs area. But some of them might have gone west later.

I know that my gr gr grandfather's wife remarried and she and her new husband and all the kids went to Texas, winding up in Gainsville, Texas. My gr grandfather, a son, came back east and became a preacher and that is how I am our family live in Alabama. But his brother went to Amarillo and was in partnerships with his brothers in law and started the store in Amarillo that became a department store called White and Kirks.

Some other White relatives went to Texas also, They were like the cousins of my great grandfather, some by the name of White and some by the name of Wyatt, Black, etc.. Some of those Blacks went to Dallas, Tex. Some of the Whites, some girls too and their husbands, etc, went to the Panhandle to places like Hale Center, etc.. Some other Whites wound up in Ok, etc.. and Tenn., etc..
I hope this helps or is of some interest to you.
Later,
Dae
