Bradley,

The info in the letter you received is a tad bit wrong according to THE WEST FAMILY REGISTER by Letta Brock Stone ( privatly published, 1928). I'll give a brief history on the de la Warr- West line.

Earliest recorded la Warr:
JOHN LA WARR ( 1199-1216)
his son:
JORDAN LA WARR
his son:
JOHN LA WARR (in the reign of Edward I, he was sheriff of Heretfordshire)
his son:
ROGER LA WARR (created Baron in 1299 and married CLARICE the daughter of Baron TREGOZ. Roger died in 1320)
his son:
JOHN LA WARR, 2nd Baron( DIED 1347) ( married in 1294-JOAN, sister and heir to BARON GRESLEY of County Lancaster. They had 1 son, John, who died before his father. This John was married
Margaret Holland and had 2 sons, ROGER( who becomes the 3rd Baron) and SIR JOHN of BOKAMPTON( who died without issue) and 1 daughter, CATHERINE who married SIR WARINE LATIMER.
his grandson:
ROGER LA WARR,3RD Baron- in 1338 he married 1) ELIZABETH, daughter of LORD WELLES. Children from this marriage: JOHN LA WARR, 4th Baron( who died in 1398 without issue); THOMAS LA WARR, 5th Baron ( was a priest and died in 1370). ROGER married (2) ( in 1358) ELEANOR, the daughter of LORD MOWBRY. THOMAS was 43 years old when he died. The only surviving child of ROGER was JOAN who married SIR THOMAS WEST. From this point on it is their descendants who carry the title of BARON DE LA WARR.
their oldest son:
THOMAS, LORD DE LA WARR- was 14 when his father died in 1405. He would have been the 4th Baron West, but was known as the 5th Baron de la Warr. He married IDA daughter of ALMARIC de ST. AMAND. Thomas died without issue. His brother, REGINALD succeeded him.

REGINALD, LORD DE LA WARR, 6th Baron - married (1) MARGARET THORLEY who died in 1433 (2) ELEANOR, daughter of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland. He died 27 August 1451
his son:
RICHARD,LORD DE LA WARR, 7th Baron- fought for the HOUSE OF LANCASTER in thr WAR OF THE ROSES. He married (1) CATHERINE, daughter of Robert, Lord of Hungerford. Children: THOMAS WEST(8th Baron);JOHN WEST; REGINALD WEST; EDWARD WEST; RICHARD WEST; FRANCIS WEST; MARGARET WEST ( who married Sir Nicholas Strelly); MARGERY WEST ( a nun); ALICE WEST (also a nun). He died 10 March 1475/6 and was succeeded by:
his son:
THOMAS,LORD DE LA WARR, 8th Baron- (1457-1525) was succeeded by his son:

THOMAS, LORD DELA WARR, 9th Baron- died childless in 1554. He was succeeded by his nephew( the son of brother- SIR GEORGE WEST):

WILLIAM, LORD DE LA WARR,- he would have been the 10th Baron, but was debarred from succeeding because of his ATTEMPT TO POISON his uncle (the 9th Barron)! However, later, because of services to the King, he was created ANEW Lord de la Warr. William, the first LORD DE LA WARR of the NEW LINE died in 1595 and was succeeded by his son:

THOMAS, LORD DE LA WARR, 2nd Baron- ( 1577- 1601/2), Married ANNE KNOLLYS. Said to have had 12 children, but only 10 are known: THOMAS( 3rd Baron);ROBERT WEST(no issue); CAPT, FRANCIS WEST; LETITIA WEST ( mar. Henry Laidlow); CAPT. NATHANIEL WEST; ELIZABETH WEST (mar.Sir Robert Pelham; PENELOPE WEST (mar. Herbert Pelham); ELEANOR WEST (mar. Sir William Savage); ANNE WEST (mar. John Pelott); CAPT. JOHN WEST. succeeded by his eldest son:
THOMAS, LORD DE LA WARR, 3rd Baron- born 9 July 1557. FIRST GOVENOR OF VIRGINIA. Died on on his 3rd voyage to Virgina.

HIS CHILDREN REMAINED IN ENGLAND. But, their descendants may have came to America at later dates.
His brothers came to Virgina and settled there- the one that is known to have done so is CAPT. JOHN WEST.

Hope this might help. I'm ssorry it's so long, but to give you an idea of where each stood in this line, it had to be.

I have a copy of the above mentioned book- so if there is anything that you would liked looked up, let me know.

Linda
