I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of a young man taken by Carson and Graham Photographic Studio, Hillsdale, MI. It is identified on the back of the mount in period handwriting: "J. A. Weitz Edgerton O." This photo was purchased with other similar ones of other young men by the same studio, many identified with the initisls "H.C." (Hillsdale College) and dated '76 or '77 (1876 or 1877). I found this individual listed in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Census data for St. Joseph Township, Williams Co., OH; the 1880 Census data for Edgerton, Williams Co., OH; and the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 Census data for Montpelier village, Williams Co., OH. I also found him listed in the Ohio Physician and Dentist Directory, 1905. He is included in at least one Public Member Tree on ancestry.com. Joseph A. Weitz, born Nov 1849 in OH, was the son of a farmer, Adam Weitz, born about 1810 in Germany; and Elizabeth Yeager, born about 1821 in PA. Joseph was employed as a school teacher before becoming a general practice physician. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1886. In about 1880, he married Hellen F. (maiden name unknown), born Nov 1853 in MI. The couple had one child, Florence M., born Dec 1881 in OH. Contact me if you wish to view and/or acquire this photo.
