Well, now I am really confused. If Elizabeth Jane Webber Dobbs remarried in 1856, who is the Elizabeth who appears with Josiah on the census for the next 44 years?? Also, I have a land transaction record from Jefferson Co. that names Josiah and wife Elizabeth as sellers in 1857.
I haven't been to the actual census yet, I'm still working from my great-aunt's notes, but they show Josiah Dobbs and spouse Elizabeth all the way up to the 1900 census. In 1860 they are in Jefferson Co., IL, P.O. Mt. Vernon, with four children. I believe that the oldest one, William, who is my ancestor, is the son of Josiah's first wife, Jane, because he is 9 on the 1860 census. The other children listed are David C. Dobbs, age 6; John M. Dobbs, age 4; Mary J. Dobbs, age 1.
It appears from my aunt's notes that for the 1870 census the family was living in Wayne Co., P.O. Johnsonville. There is an additional child, Zilpha Dobbs, age 7.
In 1900, the family is in Jack Co., TX, with John, Mary and two more girls living at home. Those last are Laura B. Dobbs, age 12; and Luella O. Dobbs, age 9.
If you are right that Elizabeth Jane Webber divorced Josiah before 1856, then I guess David C. Dobbs would be her child, and possibly John M. Dobbs.
What do you think?
I don't have any more information on the descendants of Josiah and Elizabeth, as my line goes through William, who was not Elizabeth's child, but if I find out anything else when I go to the actual census records, I'll let you know.
