Descendants of Anthony Turner

Generation No. 1

1. ANTHONY1 TURNER was born Abt. 1640 in Land's End, Cornwall, England, and died in Land's End, Cornwall, England. He married WINIFRED Abt. 1659 in Land's End, Cornwall, England. She was born Abt. 1642 in Land's End, Cornwall, England, and died in Land's End, Cornwall, England.

Child of ANTHONY TURNER and WINIFRED is:
2.       i.       RICHARD2 TURNER, b. Abt. 1662, Lands End, Cornwallshire County, England; d. Bef. 08 Oct 1742, Caroline County, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. RICHARD2 TURNER (ANTHONY1) was born Abt. 1662 in Lands End, Cornwallshire County, England, and died Bef. 08 Oct 1742 in Caroline County, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH Abt. 1680 in Gloucester Co, Va.

Notes for RICHARD TURNER:

Notes for RICHARD TURNER: (from M. Jeanette O'Boyle, 449 Pump House Road, Murphysboro, Illinois 62966- 9246) "The earliest that I have record of our Turner family is in the Caroline County, Virginia, oreder book which lists the Turners from the beginning of the county being cut out of King and Queen County, Virginia. In the late 1730's Richard Turner gives land to his four sons, Richard, James, John, and Lewis. Later in the early 1740's Richard dies and lists Richard as the heir and James as the executor.
At this time Virginia was under the English rule in which only the eldest son inherited and the next oldest was the executor. Before the will could be executed apparently the son Richard had died with no heirs and as the next oldest James inherited with Lewis becoming the executor with mother Elizabeth and sister Margaret assisting. This means the John was not living at this time since he was the next oldest and would have been the next executor. There is no way that the sister Margaret would have been made an executor if another son was living. My files are packed away in a box but I think the date of old Richard Turner's will was 1744. There is a Richard Turner listed on the tax lists in King & Queen in 1704. This may be our Richard Turner; however there is another Turner family in the same region, probably relatives, and this Richard may be from it. Most of these records were burned in the Civil War. In Caroline County only the order book remains with the details of the order book having been burned.

The orphan hearing of Meshack, Abednego, Elizabeth, and Sarah is in 1746, I believe. At this time Shadrack must have been sixteen so he would not have needed a guardian. Members of the Turner family and Meadows family were appointed as guardians. I have never found mention of a son named John as a brother of these children and do not think there was one. According to the English naming scheme the names Richard, James and Lewis would have been used before the name John. Both James and Lewis named their sons John. The scheme goes first son after father of father, second after father of mother, third after father's oldest brother, and so on; the girls were named the same only after mothers. If the Richard Turner was our Richard Turner then there is no way that Shadrack could have been born in England. I thik he was born in Caroline County, Virginia Henry County was cut from Bedford and Franklin Counties. James Turner had moved to Bedford County from Caroline County in the late 1750's or early 1760's. I do not know who Shadrack's wife was but the popular tradition is that she was Ann Hill, especially since lots of the time brothers married sisters and I believe Meshack married a Hill, also.
After school is out and I have more time I will pull all my old files out and send you copies of the order book, etc. An order book is sort of an index or a simplified version of the record with details in the files.

Generation No. 3

3. JOHN3 TURNER (RICHARD2, ANTHONY1) was born Abt. 1689 in Lands End, Cornwallshire County, England, and died Bef. 1742 in Caroline County, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH PEMBERTON Abt. 1718 in Caroline County, Virginia. She was born Abt. 1689 in Caroline County, Virginia, and died 1744 in Caroline County, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN TURNER:

John TURNER-818 was born about 1690 in Lands End, Cornwall, England. He d. about 1742 in Caroline County , VA, Royal Colony. John married (1) Elizabeth ___-819 on 1 Jul 1718 in Queen Anne's, Parish, Prince Georges C, Maryland. Elizabeth d. about 1744. Whether Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego were actually sons of John Turner or were even born in Caroline County, Virginia is still unsubstantiated. What is known however is that Shadrack and Meshack were brothers. Some people claim to have extended the family line further. Researchers making the connection to Richard and to the children below base their work on information taken from the Caroline County, Virginia Order Book from 1744. Based on the asumption that John died before the 1742 probate of Richard Turner's estate, the death of his wife around 1744 resulted in their children being assigned to a guardian. The 1744 Order Book lists Meshack, Abednego, Sarah, Elizabeth and Ann with guardianships. It is supposed that Shadrach would already have been 16 at the time and no longer needing a guardian.

According to the Caroline County, Virginia, Order Book 1740-1746, Page 344 (11 January 1745 these are the choices:

Meshech Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of James Turner, who with Saml. Norment acknowledged their bond.

Abednego Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Wm. Pemberton, who with Robt. Powell acknowledged their bond.

Elizabeth Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Jason Meadows, who with Lewis Turner acknowedged their bond.

Sarah Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of James Turner, who with Saml. Norment acknowledged their bond.

Ann Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Jonas Meadows who with Lewis Turner acknowledged their bond.

Notes for JOHN TURNER:

According to the 1744 Caroline County, Virginia order Book . The estate of Richard Turner was probated in 1742. The death of his wife in 1744 resulted in the children being assigned to a guardian. It lists Meshack, Abednego, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Ann with guardianships. It is supposed that Shadrack would have been 16 at this time and would not need a guardian.

Shadrack was the nephew of my ancestor, James Turner. When the mother of the children died Shadrack was already sixteen so no guardian was named for him. They were named for the other children in the family. All this time the father was already deceased or no guardian would have been named. He, the father, was apparently John Turner, brother of James Turner, and son of Richard Turner, who died in 1744. Shadrack's mother was named Elizabeth.

All of the Turners moved west, James into Bedford County and Shadrack into Henry Couny, which was apparently cut from Bedford. Descendents of James also lived in Henry and Franklin Counties.

Notes for MESHACK S. TURNER:

Farmer
Revolutionary War
"Deep East Texas Folk, by Terry G. Jordan and Mary Lynn Tiller Wier, page 5l.
Another family which migrated in the 1780's to the Wilkes-Lincoln County area from Virginia were the Turners, and we are also descended from them. By 1748, a Babylonian trio of brothers named Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego Turner lived in Halifax County, in the Southside area of Virginia, near the North Carolina border. Our ancestor among these three was Meshack Turner, born about 1725, probably in England. It is said that Meshack and his brothers came to Virginia with their father or brother John Turner in the 1740's from Lands End in Cornwall, England. About 1750 a son named Shadrack (II) was born to Meshack and his first wife, whose name is not known but was perhaps Lewis. We are descended from this Shadrack. Meshack Turner continued to reside in Halifax County, probably in that part which was later separated to become Pittsylvania County. He bought 264 acres of land there in 1759 and was married a second time to Rebecca Robert! son in the following year.
As a resident of Pittsylvania County, Meshack Turner contributed wheat and beef to the Revolutionary Army in 1780. His son Shadrack (II) married Margaret Hill, daughter of James Hill in the early or middle 1770's, and they too continued to live in Pittsylvania County. The Turners were middle class farmers at this time. In 1782 Meshack was owner of 10 slaves, while Shadrack (II) owned 2. About 1784, both Meshack and Shadrack (II) migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia...............Meshack Turner enjoyed economic success in Georgia. By 1793 he was owner of 18 slaves and 585 acres of land, placing him near the planter class. He died intestate late in 1793 or early 1794, and an inventory of his estate at that time revealed 23 slaves. Shadrack (II) meanwhile received a grant of 360 acres in Wilkes County in 1790, in that part which was separated to become Lincoln County in the mid-1790's. Shadrack was mentioned frequently in the Lincoln County records during the years which followed. He acknowledged an inheritance from his deceased father in 1797, sold the land in the same year, and appeared on tax and land lottery lists in 1803 and 1805......

Meshack S. TURNER-516 was born about 1722 in England. He died 28 Jan 1794 in Wilkes County , GA. Meshack was living in Pittsylvania County Virginia in 1784 and moved to Georgia about 1785.
