OK, I called my cousin in Knockfree, and she remembered that my great-grandfather had a brother Andrew Traynor who also emmigrated to the States (no idea where). He didn't like it and came home. My guess is that he was born somewhere between 1840 and 1860, so it fits the time frame.

As for the "Whiskey Traynors" - that is a reference she never heard of, but we think it is a great rumor to start.
