Telfer/Vair connection?

I am searching for the reason why my great-grandmother Catharine Telfer Vair had the middle name TELFER. I can find no evidence of a marriage to Telfers in the Vair ancestry going back four generations before her.

Catharine Telfer Vair was born 15 Aug 1854 in Kelso, Roxburgh, Scotland, first child of William Vair, born 1829 in Melrose, Roxburgh, and Jessie Bell, born 1829 in Cramond, Edinburgh.

The emigrated to Ontario around 1867, settling in Simcoe County.

If anyone has evidence of a relationship between Telfers and Vairs, even if it was only a friendship or neighbouring family in the past, I would appreciate the information very much.
