Does the Ray Co. History book you referenced mention the name of John H. Goodman's parents? there were 2 John H. Goodman's in Pittsylvania Co, VA on the 1850 census, about the same age. There were no Goodman's in Henry Co, VA, in 1850, but the one's in Pittsylvania Co. lived right across the county line and moved back and forth in the 2 counties.
John H. Goodman and Sarah F. McDaniel/McDonald were married just across the state line in Rockingham Co, NC:
