CSA General James Camp Tappan fought with the 13th Arkansas where he was a division commander. He fought at Belmont, Perryville, Shiloh, and in the Red River Campaign. He was a lawyer and politician, and his son became a Rear Admiral in the US Navy. James was also (after the war) on the Board of Visitors at West Point and Annapolis. At one point in his life he was almost the post Civil War senator from Arkansas.
Nine other Tappans fought for the Confederacy, from Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, mostly as private soldiers in the infantry. It seems odd in a famility so distinguished by Lewis and Arthur Tappan's involvement in anti-slavery movements.
