We talked some time ago about our Swank families and were not able to find any connection. We are still stranded at the same place with our "Elusive" John Swank in Washington Twp., Westmoreland Co. in 1800. My brother has joined in the search as well and has participated in a Y-DNA project for Swank, Swink, Schwenk and similar surnames. Our big draw to this project is that there are already two persons whose DNA goes back to Hans Michael Schwenk who immigrated to Montgomery Co. We believe we go back to Montgomery Co., but we may not go back to Hans Michael.
Since Jim (my brother) has submitted DNA, this would be a prime time to find out if our families do have any connection to each other. The person who submits DNA must have a direct line of the Swank (or variation) surname from the earliest known ancestor down to the submitter who obviously must also be male. The total cost is $191 for a 37 marker test, but that cost can be split among individuals who have the interest. That is what Jim and I did. If you are interested, the test is administered by Family Tree DNA, and you can find specific information about the Swank et al project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/swink/. The person to contact for more information is Mary, whose contact information is listed at the web site.
I hope you'll be able to find someone who would be willing to do this and maybe several people who would share the cost. This could provide some answers for all of us, at least letting us know if we're banging our heads on the right brick wall.
