       For the past couple of weeks I have concentrated my research on the lineage of Captain John Stone of Franklin County, NC This is not one of my primary lines, so I had done some research on it about twenty or thirty years ago and gone on to other families in my lineage.
I am descended from Jonathan Stone, the oldest son of Captain John and Alicia Hurst Stone and I have his descendants listed and documented down to myself, so my efforts these past weeks have been to try to identify the parents of Captain Stone. This I have not done.
I have identified the following children of John and Alicia and they are documented except for the youngest daughter, Nancy, who is added on circumstantial evidence only. They follow:
1. Jonathan Stone, b. 4 Jul 1755, d. 27 Mar 1837
2. Mary Stone, b. c1757;
3. John Stone, Jr., b. 25 Feb 1760;
4. William Stone, b. Sep 1763;
5. Nancy Stone b. c1764.
The first documented evidence I have of Captain John Stone is when he purchased 638 acres in Granville County from Joseph Montfort of Halifax Town, 30 Mar 1764 for 66 pounds, 13 shillings, and 4 pence. This land was located on both sides of King’s Creek, adjoining Thomas Smith. (Bute County, Deed Book I, p. 266, 3 Dec 1766). Bute county was formed from Granville County, in 1764, and abolished, in 1779, when it was divided into Warren and Franklin County. Captain Stone’s plantation fell within Franklin County after 1779.
Bute County Court records from 1764 to 1779 show John Stone serving on Petit and Grand Juries, and the 1771 Tax List, along with Jonathan, his oldest son.
On 13 Aug 1777, page 37, John Stone, Captain, and John Hopkins, Lieutenant, took the oath to the State and subscribed the same. On 15 Aug 1777, page 45, the court ordered Benjamin Eaves, constable, to summon all the inhabitants that Muster under Captain John Stone, to give Oath and inventory of all their assessable estate.
On 15 Aug 1778, page 132, the court ordered an assessment of those in Captain John Stone district, 8 dollars each.
This is the last reference to John Stone found in the court minutes. No records of him are found in the Franklin County records when it became the county of his residence, in 1779.
On 31 Mar 1780, John Stone of Franklin County, North Carolina sold to Jonathan Stone of Franklin County, North Carolina, 200 acres in Franklin County on both sides of Kings Creek joining Smith’s corner and my spring branch. (Franklin Co., NC, DB 9, p12). This would be the second son of Captain Stone.
On 23 Jul 11803, William Stone sold to Jonathan Stone, 245 acres on waters of King’s Creek, being part of a tract heretofore sold by Joseph Montfort, of Halifax County to John Stone, 13 Mar 1764. (Franklin Co., NC, DB 6, p. 161). This is the third son of Captain Stone.
The above transactions indicate that Captain John Stone died between 1779 and 1780.
The English order for naming children follows: 1st son, named for father’s father; 2nd son named for mother’s father; 3rd son named for father; 4th son named for father’s eldest brother. Order for females was 1st daughter named for mother’s mother; 2nd daughter named for father’s mother; 3rd daughter named for mother; and 4th daughter named for mother’s eldest sister.
The Stones were of English ancestry so this order would apply. Jonathan Stone, 1st son of Captain Stone would have been named for Captain Stone’s father; 2nd son, John, was named for his mother’s father, John Hurst; 3rd son would have been named John, also, since he should have been named for his father, however since the 2nd son already had that name, I believe Willliam Stone was named for the eldest brother of the captain. The order for the daughters would have been the oldest daughter, Mary, being named for her mother’s mother; and next daughter in line, Nancy, being named for their father’s mother.
So to summarize: The parents of Captain John Stone would be Jonathan and Nancy Stone. Their children would have been William Stone (eldest son) and Captain John Stone.
The parents of Alicia Hurst Stone would be: John and Mary Hurst.
Descendants of the third son of Captain John and Alicia Stone was William Stone. One of his descendant’s DNA has been checked and he belongs to the Group 11 match, thus his pedigree and descendants of William Stone would be a match, also.
Other matches include descendants of: 11-A, Eusebious Stone, of Lunenburg Countty, Virginia; 11-B, George Washington Stone, of Lncoln County, Tennessee; 11-C, William Stone of Bute County, North Carolina; 11-E, Elizah Stone,of Mecklenburg County, Virginia; 11-F, James Stone, of Tennessee; 11-G, William Stone, of Surrey County, North Carolina; 11-H, noone tested; 11-I, William Stone, no other information; 11-J, Stephen Stone, of South Carolina; 11-K, George W. Stone, of Missouri;
I have done some research on the DNA matches but I do not have conclusive information on all of them. I will be glad to share what information I was able to glean from available records. The ones I did check more thoroughly could be traced to the lineage of Governor William Stone of Maryland.
My line of descent is: Captain John Stone, b. c1735; Jonathan Stone, b. 1755, Halifax County, North Carolina; James Stone, b. 1777, Bute County, North Carolina; Avarilla Greene Stone, b. 1799, Franklin County, North Carolina, m. Charnock Cox Rust; James H. M. Rust, b. 1827, Maury County, Tennessee; Mary Frances Rust, b. 1850, Perry County, Tennessee, m. George Washington Laman; Cordelia D. Laman, b. 1877,Crockett County, Tennessee, m. William Neal Nolen; Jesse Pierce Nolen, b. 1895, Crockett County, Tennessee; Margaret Neal Nolen (Nichol), b. 1825, Alamo, Crockett, Tennessee
