From the Cedar Vale (KS) Messenger, June 25, 1970, page 1:

J. R. Stone Dies At Sedan After Brief Illness

Dr. Joshua R. Stone, 94, died June 24 at the Sedan hospital.

Dr. Stone was active in civic affairs and in state dental circles.

He was a 55 year member of Chautauqua Masonic Lodge No. 355. He was past president of the
Lions club and active in its affairs; he was a past president of the Cedar Vale Chamber of
Commerce. He was also past president of the Southern District Dental Society.

He had been a practicing dentist for 73 years, the last 65 of which were in Cedar Vale, and was
the oldest practicing dentist in Kansas.

He was born June 23, 1876 at Erie, Ill., the son of Dr. and Mrs. Simon W. Stone. He attended
grade and high school at Cherryvale and was graduated from the University of Missouri Dental
Dept. at Kansas City.

He was married to George Dean Thompson at Kansas City in 1904 and came to Cedar Vale from
Kansas City in 1905.

Dr. Stone was actively interested in hunting and seldom missed a season in western Kansas when
the pheasants were in season.

He at one time owned a garage at Cedar Vale and he drove one of the first automobiles in town.

He was a member of the Episcopal church.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Herbert L. of Cedar Vale, Dr. Harold D. of Ellinwood, Dr.
Richard L. of Garden City; a daughter, Rolloine Horton of Van Nuys, Calif.; 7 grandchildren; 9
great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Julia Russell and Mrs. Bertha Winters, preceded him in
death.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal church with Father
Phillip Ayers officiating.

Interment will be in Cedar Vale cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Home.

The family suggests a memorial be set up with donations to the Dental School at the University of
Missouri at Kansas City or to the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
