Independence (KS) Daily Reporter, Thursday, April 30, 1914, page 1:

DEATH OF J. A. STONE
Another Pioneer Claimed by Death This Morning.

J. A. Stone, aged 68, for the past 40 years a resident of Independence, died at 2 o’clock this
morning at the family residence, corner Thirteenth and Oak, of sclerosis of the liver, after an
illness of five months. He is survived by a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Nela [Nola?] Stone
Stichman, of 201 North Thirteenth, and a son, Rollo Stone, who is at home. He also leaves three
brothers, George W. Stone of Sacramento, Dr. D. W. Stone of Placerville, Calif.; and Dr. S. M.
Stone of Cedarvale, Kas.; and two sisters, Mrs. E. J. Edick of Sacramento, and Mrs. M. A.
Dennis of Placerville. A nephew and namesake, Dr. Joshua Stone, also resides in Cedarvale.

Joshua Aaron Stone was born March 30, 1846 at Centreville, Mich., and died just one month after
his sixty-eighth birthday. In early manhood he was a traveling salesman. In 1874 he came to
Independence, his father having preceded him several years and settling on a claim just north of
town. He secured a position as clerk with the firm of Camega & Anderson but later moved to the
farm to care for his father. March 22, 1880, he was married to Miss Minerva Yates, who with the
son and daughter is left to mourn the loss of his companionship. Mr. Stone acquired considerable
property in Independence and vicinity as the years went by, including his home place, a farm of
200 acres near Grabham station, and a broom factory at the corner of Twelfth and Sycamore,
which he personally supervised. Strong, vigorous and aggressive, he was successful in his
business ventures and in his prime there were few men who could do a bigger day’s work. Up till
the past few months he nearly always enjoyed the best of health.

Funeral services will be held at the home May 2, 1914, 10 a.m., in charge of the Elks and Modern
Woodmen of America, of which orders he was a member. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery in
the family lot, where his body will rest beside that of a daughter, Miss Edna Stone, who died
several years ago.
