I would like to know more about this Samuel Spears. In
particular, did he have a daughter Lamira?
My ggg-grandfather Ambrose Roberts married Lamira Ann
Spears, who was born in NY in 1812. The Roberts family was
in Delaware Co, then moved to Schoharie Co, where they
lived for several years, and then took off for IL in the
early 1830s. Ambrose and Lamira married in 1834 in Tazewell
Co IL, but it appears he had been back in Schoharie and
possibly Albany Co just before that.
On the 1830 census there are only three possible families
for Lamira: Samuel Spears in Columbia Co, John Spears in
Madison Co, and Joseph Spires in Saratoga Co. Saratoga and
Madison are not that far from Schoharie, but Columbia is
just the other side of Albany Co from it, and the Robertses
had some dealings in Albany. The 1820 census shows that
Samuel was in Albany Co, with John and Joseph in their
respective counties. Samuel seems the most likely to be
Lamira's father.
From Samuel's census entries (see below), it appears he had
two sons, William and Sam Jr, possibly another son, and
several daughters.
I wrote to the Columbia Co Historical Society, which was
able to provide me with some good information. Sam Sr, both
sons, and one daughter are buried in Prospect Hill cemetery
in Valatie NY (see below). In addition, an index to
obituaries indicated ones existed for Sam Jr and William.
But that was as far as luck took me. Sam Sr did not leave a
will, and the Columbia Co Surrogate Court has no record of
his estate settlement. His wife Nancy died before he did. I
don't know if she left a will, but it isn't likely.
William died in 1874, and Sam Jr in 1885. The local paper,
the Chatham Courier, has copies of issues back to 1880.
Unfortunately, a fire destroyed part of their archives,
including all issues for 1885, so neither obituary is
available from them. The county library has some back
issues, including one for July 1874, but it does not
mention William.
So does anyone know more about Samuel? Who were his other
daughters? Was Lamira one of them? Where in Ireland did he
come from? What was his wife's maiden name? By any wild
chance does anyone have a copy of the obituary for Sam Jr
or William?
