Hehe, I too, got a little turned around while looking for that cemetery! I drove right past it the first time and ended up on a ridge above Big Ugly. I was disappointed not to find Peyton or Jesse there as well. But, I kept asking around and even was invited to a cook-out (it was Memorial Day weekend). I did find Jesse's grave for sure, and I believe Peyton's and Telitha's. Jesse is buried in the other Spears Cemetery on 9 Mile at Price. And I have been told that there is a third Spears Cemetery on 9 Mile, but I don't know exactly where it is yet. Jesse is buried on the lower side and his grave is marked by a sandstone marker that reads "JESSE SPEARS" in two lines, followed by what appears to be part of a D and an O and 1897. Very near this grave are two others, both sandstone, marked, "OLITHE SPEARS" in two lines, followed by "bIEb APR 8" on a third line, and 1861 on a fourth. It appears that a "T" may have preceded "OLITHE" by has been badly eroded. This may very well be his mother's grave. However, the year of death is wrong. I have her death date as April 28, 1891 and she is listed in the 1880 Census. Considering the stonecarver used lower case b's in the word "died" as well as apparently mis-spelling the name, I feel strongly that they carved the wrong date as well and that this is her grave. The other grave is simply marked "P S" in one line, followed by "D AP 27" in a second line, then 1881 in a third. This could be (Henry) Peyton Spears, but I have a death date of December 1897 for him. But, that date could be wrong as I got it from another researcher. The proximity of these graves to Jesse's lead me to think that they are his parents'. I know one of Nona's grandnieces (Boyd's granddaughter) and she has given me a little information in the past. I think it's time to visit with her and see if she has anything to add. I'll have some info I'm sure she'd like as well. By the way, I was lucky I found that graveyard. I happened to stop at a trailer on a little sideroad off of 9 Mile to ask if anyone could tell me where this Spears Cemetery was. A man offered to take his 4-wheeler and have me follow him to it. On this day, I had my wife and daughter with me and I was driving a two wheel drive truck. He led me up a road that was no more than a trail back on the ridge and if it hadn't been very dry, we'd have never made it. Almost didn't as it was. I was starting to hear the "Deliverance" theme song in my mind and was a little more than nervous. But, everyone I came in contact with that weekend was more than helpful and friendly and it turned out that I was related to just about everyone I met through the Spears family. If I get a chance to talk to my cousin again soon, I'll see if I can get more good info. I still mourn the loss of the Lincoln Co. courthouse and that fire in DC that destroyed the 1890 Census. Oh, and another thing. You can go to the library in Hamlin and find some records. Their genealogy room has a lot of good info if you can sort through it. I've found some Spears and related families stuff there. Keep at it and let us know if you find anything good! Bob Notify Administrator about this message?
