Thanks a bunch! Like I said earlier, I'm finding some clues as to which child actually belonged to which adult. Several of the Spears children in this family appear to have at least one different parent from what we've been told over the years. At any rate, they were farmed out to whoever in the family would take them. I'm beginning to think that Malinda's mother could have been Lucinda (Spears) Vance instead of Mertie Elkins. If this is the case, I have to rule out (I hope) that Jesse was her father, as he was Lucinda's brother. Every older person in the family told me that Mertie and Jesse were the parents as did her death certificate and that should be proof enough, but looking at the census records is making me question this. Maybe I'm reading more into this than really exists, but for years there has been questions about the parentage on one side or the other, of some of her brothers. Maybe something will turn up.
