My great-great grandmother, Margaret (Peggy) Sixsmith was born in Queens County Ireland 27Nov1823 and immigrated to Upper Canada with her siblings and parents in 1826. Her parents were Thomas Sixsmith (b. circa 1795) and Elizabeth Wall (b. circa 1800) and known siblings were William (b. 1821); John Thomas (b. 12Jul1825) and Mary (born Upper Canada 1828). A 'story/legend' written about the Sixsmiths (which may not be true, or may pertain to the Sexsmith families which settled in the same area of UC), states the name was originally 'Smith', and descended from Tom Smith living in England in mid-1700s and was Presbyterian. Tom Smith was said to have had six sons who served in cavalry regiment in American Revolution. Two sons were said to have been killed in battle, two remained in USA, and two made their way back to UK, one being shipwrecked off coast of Ireland, & settled there.
Anyone out there have any knowledge of this family and/or heard of this legend??
Family oral history says Thomas and wife Elizabeth returned to Ireland for wedding of their son William to Julia Mulhall circa 1845. I can find no record whatsoever of Thomas and Elizabeth in UC as Canadian census started in 1851.
Thomas is said to have had three siblings: Richard John b. circa 1793; Anne Caroline b. circa 1783; and Julia b. 1788.
