Jennifer: I tried to email you directly but the address was no good -- or I could not read it. If you wish you may contact me at mikevaughn@cayugatexas.com. I too descend from Joseph, born in Salem, about 1655. You mention the date 1755 in your posting, but I assume that was a typo. As to my message to which you responded, it is now clear that the Joseph Sibley mentioned in Rev. Joseph Green's diary was not the Joseph born in 1655. That Joseph was the son of William Sibley. You should get access to Helen S. Ullmann's 2006 book Some Descendants of John Sibley of Salem, Massachusetts. It is available from the Newbury Street Press in Boston, through the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Helen is one of the finest genealogists around and is a Sibley descendant. It is her conclusion that Joseph, born c. 1655, was a son of John and Rachel -- and that conclusion has been the same one reached by every researcher that I have ever encountered. One item that she discusses was the fact that Thomas Goldthwait, Rachel Leach's second husband, made a bequest to Joseph Sibley. Helen's book, after the first two generations, focuses on Samuel Sibley's line, and not any of the other children of Joseph, born 1655. However, her coverage of the first two generations is excellent, particularly in distinguishing the two John Sibley's who were there so early. If you should happen to descend from Samuel, all the better, but the book is worth studying even for the first two generations. Good luck in your research.
