I have been spending weeks trying to sort out the mystery of Absolom Walters (he is my g-g-g-grandfather). Would love to solve the puzzle - seems the root of the mystery may be assumptions that were made and passed along. One theory is that William Walters (b. April 15, 1787) and Absolom Walters (b. Feb 2, 1786) were brothers, sons of Thomas Walters and Mary Elizabeth Sively. Another theory is that William and Absolom were 1st cousins - their fathers may have been Thomas (b. 1757) and John Walters (b. ?) , respectively, who were married to sisters Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Sievely (Sively, Sivley, sometimes Sibley). Both of these theories and name variations pop up on genealogy sites, descendants' discussions, and family trees. Is it possible that the Sibleys are not the same family as the Sivelys? I have parents of Mary Elizabeth listed as either Robert Sibley and Jerusa Chandler or Joseph Sievely and Catherine Rush. Were the Walters from the Shenandoah Valley area and the Pittsylvania County (both in Virginia) related, or are they 2 separate groups, with similar parent's and children's names all born about the same time??? Is this true also for the Sibley vs Sievely/Sively families? Is there a cross-over of unrelated Walters and Sibleys / Sivelys showing up in family trees??? Hope someone can help me sort this out!
