Joseph Sibley (born 1655)

The first in a long string of Joseph Sibley's in America was Joseph, born 1655 in Essex County, MA, son of John Sibley and Rachel Leach. According to James S. Scarborough's excellent book, Joseph died in 1718. Heretofore I have not found a record of that death anywhere, but recently came across the following item:

Samuel P. Fowler, editor, “Diary of Rev. Joseph Green, of Salem Village,” Essex Institute Historical Collections 10[Second Series, Vol. II] (1870), Pp. 89 & 90: "1711 ... April ... 25. Joseph Sibley dyed suddenly (as is supposed) by a fall from his horse near Dan. Rae's. 26. I went ye funeral which was at Dan. Rae's."

By my reckoning there were only two possible Joseph Sibley's to whom this might refer. One is Joseph, the son of William and grandson of John, P. 11 of the Sibley book, about whom there is no information. The other is Joseph, son of John, who was married to Susanna Follett. My gut feeling is that Joseph who married Susanna is the man referred to in the diary entry.

If anyone has any thoughts on this matter, or proof one way or the other I would appreciate hearing from them, and am happy to share any information that I have. Feel free to post a reply here or write me directly at mikevaughn@cayugatexas.com.
