Whit,
I am looking for information about Gabriel Garrison Sibley of Copiah County. I think that Gabriel and Pleasant may have been brothers.Gabriel Garrison named one of his sons
"Gabriel Pleasant Sibley".
I found Pleasant M. Sibley in the East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana census for 1900. He's listed like this:
#270 - Holden Mosby,age 27, m. 2 years, farmer
Missouri - wife - age 27
Rebecca - daughter- age 1
Pleasant M. Sibley - father-in-law - b. Nov. 4,1828, age 72, b. Mississippi,father b. N.C., mother b. N.C., farmer/laborer
Harriet - mother-in-law - b. March 1832, age 68, 9 births, 8 living children, b. Amite Co. Mississippi
James Sibley - boarder - b. March 1882, age 18, single, laborer
(Could James be a grandson of Pleasant and Harriet?)
And I have that Pleasant M. Sibley died in Mississippi.
The reason that I think Gabriel and Pleasant are brothers is that Gabriel was born in Mississippi (either Amite County or Copiah County) in July 1830 and he moved to Louisiana in 1860 to Livingston Parish. After the war, he moved to East Baton Rouge Parish where he lived with his wife and 8 children ( my grandmother was the youngest, born in 1888). His parents were born in N.C. There is also a sister, Mary Jane Sibley Hart, married in 1875 to Charles Henry Hart who was from Rhode Island. They didn't seem to have had children but in the census, they had 2 nieces and a nephew living with them - these were John Jones, 24 years, Mary Jones, 22 years and Susan Jones, 20 years, all born in Louisiana so they probably were related to Mary Jane rather than to Charles Hart.Mary Jane was born in Sept. 1825 in Mississippi and her parents were born in N.C. She and her husband are buried in the same cemetery, the Volentine-Sibley Cemetery located on Flannery Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as Gabriel Garrison Sibley. So for a time, Mary Jane, Pleasant, and Gabriel Sibley were all living in East Baton Rouge Parish. Seems likely that they were related.
I hope this bit of information helps you. I would be very grateful if you let me know if you find out anything about Pleasant Sibley or anyone in that family.
Anne McGuire
