JOHN L. SIBLEY was born about 1809 in VA, and died January 23, 1873 in King George County VA. He married MARY ANN HEWLITT February 11, 1837 in Fredericksburg, VA.Their marriage required the payment of $150 in bond money to the City of Fredericksburg for their intermarriage. This bond was posted by John L. Sibley & Samuel McKinsey. (Note intermarriage would mean remarriage).
1840-John is listed on the Spotsylvania County Census.
1850-John is shown on the Spotsylvania Co. Census, age age 39 and employed as a sailor. Also living with him are his wife Mary Ann, age 36, daughter Isabella F. age 12, son John age 4, and an Eliza Hart age 21.
John may have owned a scooner by the name of "Martha".
1/16/1858 The Virginia Herald Newspaper Index shows, Sibley, John L. court case 3x2
1860-The Fredericksburg City Census shows John L. age 50, & wife Mary A. age 44, and 2 sons, John & Henry W.
1870-The King George Co. Census shows John L. age 59. He is living with his wife Mary A. and son John. He is a farmer. Also living with them are William Hewlett age 21 and Robert Hewlitt.
Johns's obituary from the Fredericksburg Newspaper:
Died in King George County, January 23, 1873, after a lingering illness, Capt. John L. Sibley, in the 63rd year of his age.
Mary Ann's obituary from the Fredericksburg Newspaper:
7-10-1886, Mrs. Sibley, an aged lady, died at the residence of her son Mr. John Sibley in this place, Fredericksburg, VA, yesterday morning.
