Jacob Shaffer/Mary Peterfish--Rockingham, VA

Can someone explain how the Jacob Shaffer who married a daughter of Peter Bieterfisch (Peterfish) in 1796 in Rockingham was the son of Jacob Shaffer Sr. and his wife Catherine of Mill Creek in Shenandoah? (Jacob Shaffer Sr. married secondly Otilla Schmid.)

The following four Shenandoah deeds of conveyance suggest Jacob Shaffer Jr., son of Jacob and Catherine, already had a wife named Mary as early as 1790, probably earlier.

1788: Jacob Shaffer Jr., assignee of Jacob Baughman, 209 acres on Mill Creek adj. Michael Shaffer and Rudoph Brook or Brock.

1790: Jacob Shaffer Jr. and Mary his wife to Rhinehart Coffman for 30 lbs 564 acres on Straight Branch of Mill Creek, land granted to Jacob Shaffer Jr. 3 Jun 1788 by patent.

1793: Jacob Shaffer Jr. and Mary his wife to Leonard Coffman for 22 lbs land on Ryals Run bounded by Christian Shaffer.

1793: Jacob Shaffer & Mary to Philip Eckhart a parcel on Mill Creek adj. Michael Shaffer

Because he was twice called Jacob Shaffer Jr. in the above deeds, there seems little doubt he was son of Jacob Shaffer Sr., who was then married to Otilla. Both Jacob Sr. & Jr. were carried on the Shenandoah tax rolls thru 1792 (no tax list for 1793) and they were often called Jr. and Sr.

Jacob Shaffer and Mary Peterfish have been assigned three children born prior to their 1796 marriage; Catherine 1785, John 1791, & Israel 1792. Is the assumption made that Jacob was earlier married to Mary and had children Catherine, John & Israel; that subsequently the first Mary died and Jacob Jr. remarried to Peterfish and had children Jacob and Jonathan? This sounds pretty iffy. Does someone have evidence that was the case?

And why wasn’t Peterfish’s Rockingham groom in 1796 Jacob Shaffer the son of George Shaffer of Rockingham? That particular Jacob was born about 1763. He was shown on the Rockingham tax list in 1783 living with his father George Shaffer. Beginning in 1789 he was taxed as an individual and he was still in Rockingham in 1815 (maybe even later). He was >45 in the 1810 census and in 1815 a Jacob Shaffer Jr. appeared along with Jacob Shaffer Sr. on the Rockingham tax rolls. We might suspect that Jacob Shaffer (husband of Peterfish) was called Sr. in 1815 because his son Jacob (born 1798) had come of age and was now being taxed.

Is it possible Jacob Shaffer of Mill Creek (son of Jacob and Catherine) was married to Mary Pence and lived in Shenandoah? And that Jacob Shaffer of Rockingham (son of George) married Maria Peterfish and lived in Rockingham?
