This may have been previously circulated, but I’ll post it again in case not. John Shaffer (1755-1847) and Eve Kelkner (died 1830, Washington Co., VA) After John Shaffer’s death in 1847, Jacob Miller Jr. and his wife Catherine Shaffer, daughter of John and Eve Kelkner Shaffer, filed a lawsuit against Catherine’s brother George Shaffer. In the Bill of Complaint Jacob Miller charged that George Shaffer had induced his father John Shaffer to destroy his will and had maneuvered John in such a fashion as to obtain the greater part of his father’s estate. The children of John Shaffer were named in the Complaint (see below). The Answer by George Shaffer was dated 4 Mar 1852 and filed the following October. He denied all charges of fraud and deception and asked the Court to dismiss the charges with costs. The Court apparently agreed as Jacob Miller was forced to pay George Shaffer’s Court costs. This would seem to cast doubt on the oft-told story that George Shaffer treated his father poorly and cheated his siblings of their inheritance. The order in which the children were named in the complaint follows: Catherine Miller George Shaffer Thomas Shaffer William Shaffer Samuel Shaffer Henry Shaffer John Shaffer Jr. Sally Moree Rebecca Lindamood Betsy Whiteman Rosy Friend Polly Seek John Shaffer who married Eve Kelkner had a brother Frederick Shaffer who married Barbara Fry. The majority of Frederick and Barbara’s family passed through or ended up in Clinton, Indiana. Because Betsy Shaffer who married John Whiteman also ended up in Clinton, Indiana there has been speculation Betsy Shaffer was Frederick’s daughter and not John’s. This Bill of Complaint should settle that matter. Betsy was John’s daughter. Notify Administrator about this message?
