SUNBURY - B. Irene Shaffer, 96, a lifelong resident of Sunbury, comfortably and peacefully passed on to eternal life with her Savior and loved ones who have gone before, on Friday, July 22, 2005, at RiverWoods Nursing Center, Lewisburg, where she resided for nine months. She had also lived at Outlook Pointe, Lewisburg, for two years. She was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Harvey and Della Leona (Sears) Shaffer. Miss Shaffer graduated with honors from Sunbury High School in 1926. She served as the class reunion secretary since 1931, and enjoyed reunions with her classmates until 2004. She also completed a Penn State Extension course in business. Miss Shaffer worked as a bookkeeper and cashier for PPL in the Sunbury office and at the Steam Electric Plant in Shamokin Dam for 47 years, retiring in 1973. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church in Sunbury, where she taught the Bella L. Sears Sunday school class (named for and taught by her grandmother) for 26 years. Miss Shaffer held offices in the Missionary Society and on the Official Board and Pastor Parish Relations Committee She also served as the lay delegate to the church regional conference. Her faith touched many lives, and until the last week of her life her prayers were beautiful. The peace of her last week of life as she waited for her time to leave this earth is further testimony to the faith that was cultivated at Bethany and by her beloved grandmother, Bella L. Sears. Miss Shaffer was a member of Sunbury Business and Professional Women, and was a past treasurer and recording secretary. She was also a member of the Mary Derr Rockefeller Auxiliary of the Sunbury Community Hospital, the Sunbury Senior Action Center, and Sunbury Chapter and National American Association of Retired Persons. Miss Shaffer was a member of the Ladies' Bowling League at Woodlawn Bowling Alleys, and traveled to tournaments in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. She served on the board of the PPL Employee Credit Union, and her volunteer efforts were with the Heart Association as a fund-raiser, and with Meals on Wheels. Surviving are one sister, Emma L. Minier of Kingston, and her niece, Judith Pelter, who lovingly cared for and watched over her in latter years; this was a very special privilege. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Irene Jaques of Moffat, Colo., Wendy Minier of Kingston, Joan Judge of Wilkes-Barre, Janice Rhoades, Donna Bostian, and Richard Shaffer, all of Sunbury, and Paul Shaffer and David Shaffer, both of Sebring, Fla.; great- and great-great-nieces; great- and great-great-nephews; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Paul Shaffer, and her grandmother, Bella L. Sears, who was like a mother and was lovingly referred to as "Mama." There will be no viewing, but friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, where the service will be conducted at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Mark Meister, with remembrances by family and friends. Donations may be sent to Macular Degeneration Foundation Research Fund, P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053. Funeral arrangements were by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.

SUNBURY — Emma L. Minier passed peacefully on to Eternal Life at home in Kingston on Fri., Oct. 28, 2005. Previously, Mrs. Minier lived in Sunbury until 1950.
She was born in Sunbury on Oct. 11, 1909, a daughter of the late Harvey and Della Leona Sears Shaffer. She was married on April 21, 1931, to Clyde Monroe Minier, who preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Minier attended Sunbury High School. She and her husband enjoyed attending high school class reunions, especially their 50th reunion, and maintaining contact with Sunbury friends. Mrs. Minier was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, Sunbury. She maintained her membership and support after moving to Kingston. She was a member of the Bella L. Sears Sunbury School Class, taught by her grandmother, and had many longtime friends who were church and class members. She loved her church and her faith sustained her. Mrs. Minier's life was successfully spent caring for and loving her family, her home and her pets. She was selfless in that care and always wanted only the best for everyone. She worked hard and was a very loving and devoted woman within her immediate family and cared deeply for her extended family. She considers "all things bright and beautiful." Surviving are her daughters, Joan of Wilkes-Barre and Wendy of Kingston, who had lovingly taken care of her fulltime in the past few years. She is also survived by one grandson, Jeffrey; and a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all whom she loved dearly and respected greatly. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, B. Irene Shaffer; and two brothers, Ralph and Paul Shaffer. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, with the Rev. Mark Meister officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam. There will be no viewing but friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, Susquehanna Avenue and Alice streets, Sunbury, PA 17801.
