A biography of Gordon Oren Schafer is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 827. Gordon was born, 29 Apr 1878, son of Oren H. and Mary (Sperry) Schafer, born in Michigan, 1846 and 1848, respectively. Gordon attended the public schools of Mount Clemens, MI. His first employment was as a farmhand. In 1896, he moved to Denver, CO, and was employed on a ranch, later moving to Wyoming where he worked on a large ranch, riding the range and doing all the outside work. Later, he went to St. Paul, MN, and worked in the stockyards for one season. The following winter he spent in the lumber camps. In 1899, Gordon came to Montana, locating on Judith Basin with Jack Waite. Later he was a range rider, then located to Lewistown where he was employed by Charles Lehmen and Company, a large mercantile business. He was successively a bookkeeper, paying teller, then director of the Judith Bank (later named First National Bank of Lewistown). In 1905, he organized & was cashier of the Citizens State Bank at Moore, MT. He also managed a large lumber and mercantile business until 1910, when he sold his interests and constructed a water, electric and power plant at Libby, MT. Soon after, he was appointed receiver of the Chester Trading Company, Chester, MT. In 1913, he moved to Great Falls and organized the Shafer Investment Company, and in 1916, in association with his brother, Hugh L. Shafer, he organized and was chosen as secretary, treasurer, and manager of the Great Falls Building and Loan Association. From 1904 to 1910, Mr. Schafer, with Murray Deaton, were in the cattle business on a large scale in Fergus County, MT. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
