Shaddock in VA and NC

Josiah (or Joshua) Shaddock gave land to 2 sons-in-law (John Hill and John Phillips) in Cumberland Co., NC in the early 1750's. Other Shaddocks in the area at the time were Henry, Isham, and Lawrence. It is possible the family had links with Caroline Co., VA, for there was a Thomas Shaddock was there some 20 years earlier. This surname is very scarce in both states at this time. Could the family, perhaps have originated in New England, where the name with a different spelling is numerous? Any help would be most appreciated.Bob Goodloe
