Have you browsed through the usgenweb archives? They have some clippings from a newspaper called the Hannah Moon in Cavalier, ND. Here is the URL if you want to take a look:

There are many mentions of a Thompson family but one entry in particular caught my eye. It is from the Oct. 10, 1913 edition and reads:

"Louis Selby, our genial and obliging barber has decided to resign his position with J.A. Thompson. He leaves about November 1st for Montana. Doctor's instructions are that he must have a change in climate and live more out-of-doors."

I thought it was interesting since it mentions the two surnames you mentioned, but it's probably a long shot.

I am researching the Selby family in Ontario, Canada and haven't been able to uncover much yet. I do know that I am related to the NHL hockey player, Brit Selby.
