For more on the Eli SELBY family, on the RootsWeb home page, click Family Trees in the strip at the top. On the next page, click Advanced Search. On the next page fill in data for Eli SELBY, b. 1761, MD. Among those who sent information are Jan ROOU of Viroqua, Vernon Co., WI,a local researcher who has helped a lot, & Sue [LEIST] PARSONS of Mission, KS (descendant through Julia SELBY & Isaac GARDNER).

Ruth SHIPLEY as the name of Eli's wife is proven through a lawsuit in Maryland to clear a land title. It said she had married Eli SELBY & moved to Ohio. Children of Eli SELBY are proved because son John died as a young man, and his sisters & husbands all released claims to his estate.

As far as I know, SHIPLEY is not proven as the name of Mordecai's wife Hannah. DAR accepted Samuel SELBY, son of Wm. of Prince George's County, as father of Mordecai SELBY, but I haven't been able to prove that. Samuel apparently remarried and moved briefly to Virginia and then to North Carolina.

Of Eli's daus., Harriet SELBY m. Frederick GROVES, & Mary SELBY m. Jonas GROVES, brother of Frederick, & all moved to Viroqua, WI. There were seventeen children of these two daughters, so there are now thousands of relatives.

Margaret, d/o Eli SELBY, married Pemberton EVANS, Henry SHANER, & John ILIFF. Henry was brother of Adam SHANER, whose son Martin SHANER married Julia GROVES, daughter of Harriet SELBY & Frederick. Martin & Julia had a daughter Abigail SHANER. After the death of Martin SHANER, Julia married James A. COOK who had a daughter Amanda COOK by first wife Susanna HAY. Abigail SHANER was mother of my grandfather, and Amanda COOK was mother of my grandmother, so my grandparents considered themselves cousins because their mothers were stepsisters.

Who was Catherine's husband? What dates and places do you have for her family? We'd like details to connect Patrick, Catherine, and YOU.
