Thomas SELBY (wife Catherine HAY), his son Joseph and his grandson Walter....

Thomas SELBY, husband of Catherine HAY, wrote his will 22 September 1859. Among others, he names his five oldest sons, Thomas. Enoch G, Luke, H. J. and Joseph.

In his codicil, dated 2 July 1866, he names sons Thomas, Hamilton J, Luke, Enoch G, and grandchildren Walter SELBY, Mary MILLER, Wilbert MILLER, Thomas MILLER, and Grace MILLER. This would imply that Joseph is deceased and Walter stands in his stead, as the other four grandchildren stand in stead for their mother, Samantha SELBY MILLER, who died 13 May 1864.

It has been generally accepted by other researchers, myself included, that Joseph was married to Rhoda BARR. However, according to census records, Joseph and Rhoda did not have a son named Walter. Also, if they did have a son named Walter, why would Walter be named and not his siblings? I now suggest that Joseph SELBY and his wife Rhoda BARR belong to another family!

There was a Joseph P SELBY in Knox Co., Indiana who married Eleanor HOLLINGSWORTH on 11 June 1841. They apparently had a son Walter Scott SELBY. A Walter SELBY is found in the 1850 Subdivision 61, Knox Co. Indiana census living with his probable grandparents John and Nelly HOLLINGSWORTH. Walter is 7 years old.

Joseph P SELBY appears in this same Subdivision 61 census with Elizabeth SELBY and children Fanny A, John T and Sarah E PALMER (note: J. P. SELBY married Elizabeth PALMER on 2-2-1850 in Knox Co., Indiana. An earlier marriage between Elizabeth HOLLINGSWORTH and Harrison PALMER occurred on 2-2-1835. It appears that Eleanor and Elizabeth were sisters.)

The 1860 census for Ashland, Ashland Co., Ohio, shows a Walter S. SELBY, age 17, painter, living in what seems to be a boarding house. His grandfather, Thomas SELBY lives in Ashland Co., Ohio.

I cannot find Joseph P SELBY anywhere in the 1860 census. But is he the Joseph P SELBY, who reportedly died 28 December 1863 in San Francisco, California?

Am I on to something or am I having a senior moment? Any/all comments, suggestions will be appreciated.....

Gladys
