Hi Mary --

NO relation to me in ANY way! But I always check in case something goes back to my Erie Co., OH, Shafers. One of those married Alvin Warren, my gx2 grandfather. He had a daughter, Mary J., whom everyone called "Mamie." So, you have two names that caught me out of the corner of my eye.

I can't help you much, except to say that Benjamin F. Schafer was the son of John Schafer, born ca. 1834/35 in Hessen-Casel, which is now Kassel in the State of Hesse, Germany. John's wife is Sarah J., b. 1846/47 in PA. Both of her parents were also b. in PA. This is a LONG reach -- I can find only one record of a John Schafer (any spelling) marrying a "Sarah" in ca. 1863-1865 that fits John and Sarah's backgrounds: a John M. Shaeffer married a Sarah Hershey in Lancaster Co., PA, in 1863. Sarah would be a bit young, but it's possible.

Benjamin F. Schafer's wife's name is "Mary J./Mamie/Mammie/Mayme" Culbert, b. according to various censuses in Delaware in August, 1870. Also according to various censuses, both of her parents were born in Ireland. She is found on the 1880 Census in Princeton, Scott Co., IA, within SHORT walking distance of the Schafers, who are ALSO living in Princeton at this time! "Mammie," in this case, is living in the household of Samuel Culbert, Sr., b. ca. 1832/33 in Ireland, and his wife, Mary J., b. 1833/1834 in Ireland. Judging from this enumeration, the Culberts came to Scott Co. not long after Mamie was born, sometime between 1870-1872. Also, Mamie's brother, Samuel, Jr., appears to be enumerated as CALBERT on the 1900 Census, but is back to CULBERT on the 1910.

I cannot PROVE that this Culbert gal is Ben's wife. This is an assumption I am making based solely upon a census index search on the following severe restrictions:

1. Living anywhere in Iowa (ONLY) in 1880.
2. Born in Delaware.
3. Born in 1869-1871, ONLY.

This turned up 17 people, of which there was one "Mary" and one "Mammie." I checked these both out and found that only "Mammie's" parents were born in Ireland -- and, quite coincidentally, she lived in the SAME township in Scott Co. as the Schafers. Mamie Schafer was enumerated as "Mammie" on the 1920 Census, as was Mamie Culbert on the 1880 Census.

Now, here's where all the fun starts -- you get to decide for yourself! Also, the Scott Co. site has a BIG bunch of information on BOTH its German background and its Irish background, in particular. You may want to do extra research on this, too.

Best of Luck,

Mike Collier
