My family has a Maria Magdelana Schaefer born about 1800 and she had a brother named John Schaefer who married Elisabeth Kathrarine Merkel. Maria married Nicholas Merkel. Their children were, Anna Regina, Louisa, Anna Maria, and Johann Ludwig Merkel.
I know that they were last in the Darmstadt area before coming to the US and they settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. They came between 1825 and 1830, I believe.
Let me know if this helps. Maria was my ggg grandmother.
