Fishing on google, I found a most interesting letter, dated Feb. 18, 1871, from Joseph Richerson, French Lick, Orange Co IN to the Secretary of War, Washington D.C. Richerson states that on Oct. 3, 1868 at his home in Washington Co KY, "A party of Ku-Klux...made a night attack upon me." He says he defended himself and his family, "and am glad to know some at least of that party paid their last debot in that attack." He felt forced to leave "the place of my nativity." He still has land in KY, but cannot go back; to stay away will make beggars of himself, wife, and six children. I checked censuses, and in 1870, Orange Co IN: Joseph Richerson 42 farmer all born KY Mornilles? 34 keeping house (see spelling in census below) Cynthia 14 Elizabeth T 12 Lucinda 10 Sarah B 8 William G. 6 Laura A 4 1860 Washington Co KY census: 684 Joseph Richardson 29 farmer KY Marilett 24 Cintha A 4 Frances E. 2 f Lucinda 2/12 f Does anyone know this family?
