LONG-RICHERSON ACTIVITY

Hi Lois,
I don’t know much, but here are some tidbits I’ve gathered. I’m afraid they will just confuse us more! Let’s hope someone will chime in and sort us out.

Generally, there seems to be a connection between our proven Richersons and the Longs, at least Phillip Long. And even though the oral history in our family was that our Richersons had no relations in Caroline, it seems likely that our bunch (proven back to Giles Richerson) and the others in the county would be related at some level.

Your Lucy E. Richerson, who marries John F. Long, appears to be daughter of William Richerson (born about 1815) and Martha (born about 1819). The family appears in the 1860 Caroline County VA census, P. O. Flippo’s Store:
Household 66
William Richerson 45 shoemaker
Martha 41
John 19 shoemaker
Sarah A. 17
William H. C. (?) 15
Martha 13
Mary F. 11
Lucy E. 9
Robert F 7

In the 1850 Caroline County census another shoemaker appears:
James 61 (born about 1789)
Lucy 61
Louisa A. 26
Dorothea F. 25
Lucinda 23
Mary E. 22
Austin 18

This same household, minus the father, appears in 1860 Caroline County census, Reedy Church:
Lucy Richerson 70
Louisa 35
Frances 32 (possibly Dorothea of 1850)
Austin L. 28
James Franklin 39
Mary E. 28
Louisa V. 3

I do not know at this time what relationship if any exists between these Richersons and ours--although it seems very likely that they would be related. Our oldest proven, Giles
born about 1745, died 1804, had nine heirs in 1804--no James. Perhaps James, born
about 1789, was a nephew.

With the clue that your John F., born about 1847, and had in his 1880 household his aunts Virginia, Caroline and Elizabeth, we see the household in 1860, Flippo’s Store:
Zachary Long 45 carpenter
Virginia 54 weaver
William 53 carpenter
Caroline 47
Ann E. 29
John (F?) 11
So, if Virginia and Caroline are John’s aunt--who are his parents here? The fact that he names a son Zachary suggests that Zachary is his father or his guardian.

In 1850, John F. doesn’t appear in this Caroline County VA household:
William Long 40
Virginia 42
Caroline 32
Mary 38

Have you found John F. Long in 1850?

Back to Richersons!

There certainly seems to be a relationship between Richersons and Longs

1. The fact that our Thomas Richerson (son of Giles) chose Phillip Long as a guardian for his only little son suggests a close relationship. Perhaps Long was Richerson’s minister. Perhaps he was related.

Thomas Richerson, will written Nov. 1, 1815, recorded Nov. 15, 1815, named Phillip Long as one of three guardians to his only heir “my little son Reuben Richerson.”

Researchers say Phillip Long married Fanny Gatewood. Who is she, and does she have a relationship to our Thomas Richerson?

2. An online gedcom lists Fanny Gatewood’s father as John Gatewood, Sr., and her
siblings as Joseph, Nancy (married a Eubank), Lucy (married James H. Broaddus), and
John Jr.,

Another source has John Gatewood Senior (1735-1815) married to Ann “Nancy” Dudley with children Matthew, Chaney, Mary, PHILIP, George W., Catherine and Lucy, and possibly Dudley and Nancy Ann (with first wife Betty??) Where is Fanny?

This Philip Gatewood (b. c. 1783) married first LUCY RICHERSON (spelling varies) in 1809. Lucy died before Feb. 1819, when he married Nancy Broaddus, dtr of Mordecai ad Martha Jane Reynolds Broaddus. ‘

Philip Gatewood and Lucy Richerson had at least one child, a daughter, Frances Ann, about 1810.

My notes say that Philip Gatewood’s first wife Lucy Richerson was Giles Richerson’s daughter--that is to say, our Thomas Richerson’s sister. When Lucy Richeson (sic) married Philip Gatewood, Feb. 13, 1809, Caroline Co, her security was Thomas Richerson. Their father had died in 1804.

So at the time of his writing his will, Philip Gatewood was Thomas’s brother-in-law or widowed brother-in-law. We wonder if Philip Gatewood was brother to Fanny.

3. The Rev. Phillip Long’s daughter Martha R. married Silas Broaddus.

4. Phillip Long was executor and issued an account of the estate of Thomas
Richerson, 1817.

1832 Phillip Long, with Reuben, Mordecai and Andrew Broddus, supported the Rev. War pension application of John Broaddus, born 1764.

Danny Hunley (hulez@crosslink.net), 2001 query, actually signed “Mary”(don’t know if this is a current email)
sought info on Rev. Philip Long, Methodist Minister, inquirer’s ggggrandfather. Says
Philip’s daughter Martha married Silas Broaddus, and Philips wife was a Gatewood.
Also seeking info on Thomas Edgar Richersonm enlisted with Confederate troops in Sparta (Caroline Co VA) and later moved to Mathews Co. VA
