What a week!
1st, we are satisfied that GILES RICHERSON is the father of our previously oldest proven THOMAS RICHERSON.
The "smoking gun": when Giles Richerson died in 1804, his admin. was John Richerson. In 1805, the other heirs sued for a division of the estate, which the court ordered to be divided into nine parts.
On the fabulous Library of VA website, the Chancery Court Record Index search led me to the court documents (photocopy of handwritten record, dec. 1805) of the nine lots drawn by each of the nine.
Each heir received slaves and bonds totalling 251.26.9 pounds.
THOMAS received slaves ARMSTED AND ISBEL.
Thomas died in 1815, just ten years later, (leaving 3 year old orphan REUBEN and naming his own brother JOHN RICHERSON as one of 3 guardians of the boy).
Executor PHILIP LONG conducted an estate sale and concluded his report on the estate in 1817. Included: income from the hire of THomas's slaves ARMSTED AND ISBEL.
Thank goodness for unusual names!
This key detail on top of other clues makes us confident that the parents of our THOMAS RICHERSON are GILES and his wife JANE JOHNS RICHERSON.
Other heirs of Giles: John, Salley, Martha (Patsy), Lucy, Elizabeth (widow of Henry Stuart Jr.), Jane, and Molley and Frances (Mrs. Benjamin Hurt).
Since the heirs drew lots, the order in which they are named in the estate settlement is not a good hint to birth order. However, since JOHN RICHERSON was the administrator, that suggests he was older than other son Thomas.
GILES RICHERSON
The name appears in Caroline County VA as early as 1765, when on Aug. 8 GILES RICHERSON proved mortgages from WILLIAM RICHERSON to John Tyalor Gentleman; others proving the mortgages Moses Penn and JOSEPH RICHERSON.
1781 Jiles (sic) Richerson and Jane his wife acknowledged that they were indented to GEORGE RICHERSON.

GILES RICHERSON, THOMAS RICHERSON, REUBEN BROADDUS, and PHILIP VAUGHN sign a document for RICHARD BLANTON.
Note: Reuben Broaddus was our Thomas Richerson's father-in-law, father of his wife Eleanor who died between the birth of THomas and Eleanor's orphan Reuben Broaddus Richerson about 1812 and Thomas's death Nov. 1815. Reuben Broaddus became little Reuben's guardian in 1816.
1793 Giles Richerson, already owning 311 acres in Caroline Co, received by transfer 194 acres from GEORGE RICHERSON
1794 Giles received by transfer 142 acres from JAMES FOGG .
At least through 1798, Giles Richerson owned 647 acres.
1800 Clues to the location of Giles Richerson's home:
REUBEN BROADDUS, GILES RICHERSON, GRAY SAMUEL--ordered to survey need to repair CREEK BRUDGE near EDMUND PENDLETON's OLD MILL.
Later in the year, the court paid Giles $6 for repairs on CREEK BRIDGE
"near his house."
1804 March court ordered that GILES RICHERSON, EDMUND PENDLETON, GRAY SAMUEL, JOHN PENDLETON, any three, let the rebuilding of a bridge across EDMUND PENDLETON, deceased, MILL RUN, below where his old Mill formerly stood.
NOvember 1804 will of GILES RICHERSON proved by REUBEN, THOMAS, and MORDECAI BROADDUS; probate to JOHN RICHERSON.
Now that this Giles is ours, we're looking at the other Giles Richersons around, and suspecting that they are related, too.
ON TO DNA:
Just received first report from DNA on our Richerson, and we have a 25-marker perfect match with researchers whose oldest proven is TERRELL RICHARDSON. They believe him to be born 1803, Augusta Georgia.
