While a number of later census list him as being born in Alabama, the 1850 census lists him and sister Missouri as being born in Louisiana. Others are listed as Georgia or Alabama. I feel that there is some liklihood that is correct although I have no idea where. I have my guesses. If he was born in Alabama, then it was in Tallapoosa or Chambers and not Jefferson.

I find no connection with Jefferson co. and William. Other than the 1850 census, I don't find a connection with him and Louisiana either.

William Richards was in Chambers Co., AL in the 1840 census. He was busy acquiring land in Tallapoosa and Chambers between 1837 and 1851. He was never in Jefferson. Initially he was in Russell, then Chambers. All these counties are on GA/Ala line. Margery Webster Richards father was also acquiring land in Tallapoosa, Chambers and Lee.

There were other men named William Richards living in Alabama at the same time. One lived in the Tuscaloosa area, another in Barbour and Henry Counties.

Tallapoosa county was incorporated around 1832. Birmingham is in Jefferson County. Jefferson became a county abt 1820. Jefferson is north and west of Tallapoosa. There was no town or community called Birmingham until after 1870. Z T would have been over 20 at its founding.

Many early settlers came through Chambers and Tallapoosa going west. I had another group come from Georgia into Coosa (west and adjacent to Tallapoosa) and then ultimately go straight across Mississippi to the Shreveport, La area. This was a popular route West through Vicksburg. I suspect that this family went west for some reason and then came back to Tallapoosa before 1850 to rejoin her parents. He then died after 1851.

Asa is acquiring land in Marshall Co by 1882. Zachra T is acquiring land there 1896. I still don't know where they were for 1870 census.

Hope this explains my position.
