I've noticed that most family trees for descendants of Jesse Reid of Union Co., GA fail to identify Jesse's father. Yet there is direct proof in an unexpected place - a pension application made from Haywood County, NC regarding a soldier's marriage in SC: [7 October 1844, Union County, Georgia] "Jesse Reid, a resident of the said County and State and made Oath...That deponent was present and witnessed the solemnization of the rites of matrimony between the parties aforesaid (to wit) Charles Stephens & Barbary Reid which marriage took place in Pendleton District South Carolina at the house of his father Joseph Reid, ..." So, Jesse Reid's father is shown to have been Joseph Reid of Pendleton District. An existing marriage bond shows that the marriage occurred in 1795, thus placing this Joseph Reid in SC in that year. There are, however, at least 4 men named Joseph Reid/Read/Reed who lived in Pendleton in the 1790s, so much confusion is possible. Union County, Georgia's Jesse Reid was born about 1785 in NC, was listed 1820 in Buncombe Co., NC (area probably now Henderson County), and on the 1840, 1850 Union and 1860 Towns County, GA census. He moved west late in his life and appears in the home of his recently orphaned grandchildren in August 1870 in Huerfano County, CO. His wife Elizabeth had just died of typhoid and is listed on the 1870 mortality schedule there. The children I can confidently attach to Jesse Reid are Amelia (ca 1807 NC -1863, md. James W Murray); John Lafayette (1814 NC - 1870 CO); Simpson (b. 1819 NC); and James (b. 1823 NC). The age groups represented in the 1820 and 1840 listings imply there were other offspring.
