Query, any info would help

My fiance's father would like to start researching his family, however he does not know many names. He knows his great grandfather fought in the civil war and died (he believes in Appomatox). He also believes that his family came in through the port of Charleston. If anyone has any information on how we can start our search, it would be appriciated.
