William Powe was convicted of Grand Larceny in Buchanan CO. MO in 1853 and sentenced to the State Prison in Jefferson City. The only surviving record states he was 22 yrs b. KY, 6ft 4 1/2 inches, 11inch foot, Auburn hair, Grey eyes, light complexion, Carpenter by trade, and in the remarks column it said Dead.
I wrote the prison archives to know just what 'Dead' meant and they responded it really said Dec'd. As their was no date to this notation, I wanted to know that surely there was other records for a person who died in Jail. They said if there were, the records have not survived. So I am asking POE/POWE Researchers out there, who is this young man? He was supposed to be in jail only 3 yrs according to the Buchanan records, however, the jail records said he was to be there 6 yrs. Since the crime was not capital, why did he die and when..and who were his family..good questions but no answers.
