I jut ran across your inquiry into Peter Buell Porter. I am a descendent of his sister, Eunice Porter who married my Bird ancestor, James on October 6, 1789. I have a book titled "The descendents of John Porter of Windsor, Conn. in the line of his great, great grandson, Col. Joshua Porter, M.D. of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., with some account of the families into which they married." The book was printed at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in 1882. Peter B. Porter was born 8-14-1773. An excerpt from this book is as follows: "Peter Buell Porter graduated at Yale College in 1791. He studied law with Judge Reeve in Litchfield, Conn. Removed to western New York in 1793. Member of Legislature in 1802 from Ontario county. Removed to Niagara Falls, N.Y. Elected to Congress 1808 to 1814. As chairman of Committee on Foreign Relations he was one of the most earnest advocates of the war with Great Britain in 1812, and on its declaration resigned his seat and repaired to New York, where he speedily recruited a brigade of volunteers and was appointed brigadier general. In the battle of Chippewa, a sortie at Fort Erie, and battle of Lundy's Lane, he led his command of New York and Pennsylvania volunteers. After the latter action, he was brevetted major-general. At the termination of the war he was, on the reorganization of the army, appointed by President Madison to be commander-in-chief, which he declined. He was secretary of war under President Madison. He married, September___, 1818 Letitia, daughter of John Breckenridge of Kentucky, and his wife Mary Hopkins Cabell. The children of Gen. P.B. Porter were Elizabeth L. Porter, born 4-19-1823 and died unmarried 1-28-1876; and Peter A. Porter, born 7-14-1827 and married Mary C.P. Breckenridge." (his cousin?) I have much more information on the Porter as well as the Bird families if you are interested. Regards, James D. Bird
