POLK DNA GROUP - WE NEED YOU

Hi Polk Folk

Our Polk DNA Group has continued to make slow progress in figuring out the various Polk families. To this point and based on the test results thus far, the Polks tested have fallen into two basic groups, the group seemingly related to Robert Polk and wife Magdalen (Tasker) Porter of Somerset Co., MD., and the other to William Polk/Margaret Taylor of Anson, later Mecklenburg Co., NC. We have a few awaiting test result.

There are a lot of Polks out there who think they know their ancestry, and many of you are thinking you are related to one of these two main groups, and you may well be. But if you are relying on published information (mainly the old Polk genealogies), then you may be, as I was, surprised to find out that your Polk ancestry may not be as these old writings state. Then there are the many, many of you who can go back only so far, only to run into that brick wall we all hit at some point. I have been working Polks for 23 years, all families, and I can tell you with fair confidence, that if a paper trail has not been identified by now by your research, or by my research, or by research done by several other Polk researchers dedicated to finding the truths about the Polk ancestry, it is unlikely that you will be able to come up with a paper trail, so waiting for something to surface, someday, is an exercise in futility. I have become convinced that the only way we are going to be able to come to some valid conclusions about many of these Polk lines is for male Polks from these lines to be tested and the results of these tests examined in toto and compared to each other. I have listed several Polk lines below from which we need Polk males to step forward and be tested. Without more Polk males tested and compared, we are not going very far in this quest.

Below listed are Polk lines I have selected as probable ones which results from a Polk male test may better help us make some determinations. Certainly, this list is not nearly all the unknown Polk lines out there (I have many, many more of these unknowns, but I selected the ones I know where there are likely living descendants). Some of these Polk lines we already have possibly one or two men tested, but most we have nothing. Please get tested (Family Tree DNA is my recommendation, the 67 marker test), and share you results with the Polk group at Ancestry.com. Thank you.

I will be happy to discuss any Polks with anyone who contacts me, and will let you know what I have on your line. Please contact me at billpolk@publicnetworking.org, or bapokc@gmail.com, with any questions.
