John Polk of Maury County, the son of Captain Charles Polk Mecklinburg Anson Co., North Carolina b: 29 Jul 1732 and Mary Clark. John Polk of Maury (NO !!!! middle initial)"Revolutionary Soldier" b: between 24 May 1766 and 23 May 1767 (tomb inscription) Prob. Clear Creek, Anson Co., North Carolina d: 24 May 1845 Carters Creek, Maury County Tennessee 78 years of age, m: Elizabeth ? b: abt 1767 North Carolina d: 24 Nov 1829 Carters Creek, Maury County Tennessee 63 years old. ( 63 or 65 hard to read Tomb inscription ) m: 2nd, Rebecca Briggs 1835 Maury County. John & Elizabeth's children were: Benjamin b: bet 1780 and 1790 (1820 and 1830 census) m: "Margaret" Peggy R Moore 26 Sep 1816 Williamson Co., Tn. John Jr Polk of Maury b: bet 1794 & 1799 m: Martha Harris 1814 Maury Co., Tennessee. John Jr. was living in Hardeman Co., Tennessee as of Oct 1828 as verified by the deed of conveyance to his brother Evan S Polk. Note: John Jr is in Hardeman Co., not in Tipton Co., Tennessee, John Jr. Polk of Tipton is being married to Cynthia Springs Polk in 1825 and started a family as noted in the 1830 Census Tipton Co., Tn. John Jr. of Maury has been misidentified with John Jr. of Tipton Co., Tn. John Polk Jr, married Cynthia Springs Polk (Daughter of Civil Charley) in 1825 Tipton Co. Tn. The Polk family from Tipton shows up in St. Augustine Texas and mistakenly uses John Jr of Maury as the origin of that family line. Nancy Anne Polk Kirby b: 7 Jul 1794 m: Ethelbert Kirby 8 SEP 1826 in Maury Co., TN. Note: Descendants of this family (Jamison)were in possession of a military artifact, "Captains Pin" on the pin was inscribed "Captain John Polk". I am not aware of these pins being issued to revolutionary Captains, so Nancy's John Polk of Maury would have had to served as a militia captain, Captain of the county he came from in North Carolina or he would have been a captain of Militia, Maury Co., Tennessee. Elizabeth Polk Cambell b: 9 Oct 1796 m: Robert Bruce Campbell son of John Campbell and Matilda Golden Polk (daughter of Ezekiel Franklin Polk) d: 8 Jul 1856 Carters Creek Maury, Tennessee. Robert A. Her parents were Abner Partee b: 31 Oct 1772 Granville Co., North Carolina and Mary "Polly" Shearman b: abt 1780. Grandaughter of Col. Charles Partee and Barthsheba Barringer 2nd John Hassel Hickman Co., Tn Robert A and Lavinia's children: Victoria Polk Killick b: 28 Sep 1838 Columbia, Maury Co., Tennessee m: Dr. Killick Luannah C Polk b: Jul 1829 Columbia, Maury Co., Tennessee 1st m: Robert R. Bowen 2nd m: Col. Basil B Satterfield Tennessee d: Sep 1886, Piney River Hickman Co., Tennessee. She married first Robert R. Bowen, their children: 2 boys Robert P and William R Bowen, second husband Col. Basil B. Satterfield (Major of the 36th militia in 1826, Colonel of the militia 1828, Hickman Co.,Tn.) widower, they had the following children: Pompey Satterfield Cezar Alonzo "Ross" b: 4 Jul 1860 Hickman Co., Tennessee Victoria Abner Mary Franklin Armstead Polk b: 10 Apr 1804 also born in North Carolina d: 2 Jun 1887 Maury Co., Tennessee. Franklin's parents were both born in North Carolina (1880 census) notice "Elizabeth" is born in North Carolina and not born in "Lunenburg" Virginia., Her supposed father Benedict Alderson, was documented in Richmond Virginia in 1766-67. Benedict was documented in Lunenburg Virginia up to 1783. Benedicts brother James Alderson had a daughter Elizabeth but also was of Richmond Virginia as of Elizabeth's birth. Elizabeth Pool daughter of William Poole Granville, North Carolina Muddy Creek Rowan County North Carolina mother is Elizabeth Stovall b: 10 Feb 1739 Goochland, Virginia. In 1820 William Pool is documented in Williamsport, Maury Co., ( Just an observation ) John Polk, William Polk and Samuel Polk, all Signers of Petition to Form Maury County, Presented to the General Assembly of Tennessee, August 1807. John Polk and Ezekiel Polk were counted in the 1812 census of Maury County, "Maury County Pioneers and Revolutionary Soldiers" John Polk and Elizabeth ? Of Maury Co., Tennessee As per the Death dates of their respective tombs: John Polk b: between 24 May 1766 and 23 May 1767 d: 24 May 1845 Carters Creek, Maury County Tennessee 78 years old. Elizabeth ? b: between 24 Nov 1766 and 23 Nov 1767 d: 24 Nov 1829 Carters Creek, Maury County Tennessee 63 years old. (63 or 65 hard to read Tomb inscription) This Tomb was relocated from the cemetery on Carters Creek where the two resided. John Polk of Maury received a deed from his uncle Ezekiel Polk 25 Dec 1806, Ezekiel was the grandfather of James K. Polk, this deed is recorded 27 April 1811. These men are said to be of Williamson county Tennessee. The land is described as being connected to the land of Ezekiel and William Polk who were both of Williamson County before it became Maury. Polk Family connections Page 57 – Charles Polk and wife, Tabitha, of Sumpter District, South Carolina, but now in Maury County, Tennessee, to Abram Hammons of Maury, part of 5000 acre grant to Ezekial Polk. 18 December 1809. Maury County, Tennessee Deed Book D, p. 103. The known birth date of "John" Polk, son of Captain Charles Polk is 7 Nov 1766 which fits perfectly into John of Maury's Tomb inscription and pension papers dated 2 Feb 1848. Filed by Captain Charles' wife, "Phillopena" Helms Polk and son George Washington Polk thus fitting the birth date. John Polk and Elizabeth's children who were born in North Carolina mean John and Elizabeth are in North Carolina from 1791 to 1804 Evan S. Polk b: 16 Dec 1791 North Carolina, this according to the 1850 & 1860 Madison Co., Arkansas census. Franklin Armstead Polk b 10 Apr 1804 North Carolina John Polk of Maury is definetly the nephew of Ezekiel Franklin Polk based on the Deed for land on Carters Creek, Maury Co., Tennessee. Ezekiel Franklin Polk had 4 brothers William b: abt 1725, Thomas 1830, Charles 1732 and John 1839. Ezekiel's brother John was married to Eleanor Shelby. Does anyone have proof of the place or date John Polk Jr. was born?, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina ? birth date ? Note: There is a man John Polk b: abt 1768-69 South Carolina age 82 w: Mary in the 1850 census of Mississippi, that might fit John Jr. Polk son of John and Eleanor Shelby Polk. Could be John Polk and Mary Mcbride ? In 1800 the US census records Ezekiel Polk as a resident of Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. His son Samuel Polk, son Thomas Polk, nephew Charles Jr., and Ezekiel's brother Captain Charles Polk b: 1732 are all in Mecklenburg in 1800. The Ezekiel Polk family was moving into Maury County Tennessee before 1806 but after 1800 Census even though he had been surveying land in Tennessee since about 1784. This according to my 2nd great Grandfather William Jerome Doris Spence, Co-author of "History of Hickman County" The Alderson family connection to John Polk of Maury is doubtful, the lack of solid proff or any documentation is pretty good evidence it never happened. This error appears to come from the association of the John Polks of York Co., South Carolina. More specifically, John Polk who married Nancy Alderson the daughter of Benedict and Mary Cole Alderson. John Polk b: 1774 d: 1809 who died in York Co., South Carolina had a son named John Armstead Polk who married Ann Alderson and who is later seen in Leon, Texas. These Aldersons appear in the Sumner Co., Tennessee area and these Polks may be tied to Ezekiel Franklin Polk's son John who died in 1809 York Co., South Carolina. The widow Nancy Polk probably married a man named Mitchell 2nd in Sumner Co., and with her new husband eventually moved on to Leon, Texas including her son John Armstead Polk. John of Maury b: 1766-67 ( No middle initial A), no document uses the initial A . In addition the middle initial for John of Maury son Benjamin D.A Polk is "Bogus" it is Benjamin Polk of unknown birthdate. Benjamin was born between 1780 and 1790 and as far as I can tell Benjamin's brother John probably married Martha Harris in 1814 Maury Co., John Polk Jr. of Maury marrying his cousin Cynthia Springs Polk does not add. John Jr. is of Hardeman Co., Tn, 28 Oct 1828. This means John Jr. of Maury gets married to Cynthia Springs Polk in 1825 in Tipton, Co., then makes a home in Hardeman, 28 Oct 1828 and then is seen in the 1830 Census Tipton Co., does not seem reasonable to me and lacks probability. The link between John Polk of Maury and Civil Charley of Stewart Co., is weak if not nonexistant. John Polk, son of Col. Ezekiel Polk, b. c1781, d. between February 02 - August 24, 1805, Robertson Co., TN. ( This is not likely since Ezekiel Franklin Polk the supposed father was establishing roots for his extended family in Maury Co., or Williamson Co., Tn. as per the records). Not impossible. The Wills of Benedict Alderson d: 1795 1804, Nov. 6. York Co., SC, Will Book B, p. 397: James C. Alderson, Settlement of the Estate of Bendt. Alderson for the Year 1804 being a final Settlement. Produced Receipts from Amstead Alderson b:1770, James Alderson, Jeremiah Alderson, William Alderson in favour of his wife late Mary Alderson and John Polk in favor of his wife late Nancy Alderson acknowledging themselves satisfied and fully paid their respective shares of said Estate upon Division. Sworn to before me Novbr 6th 1804 Alexr Moore [title unclear] [copy of original in York Co., SC, Estate Records, Bk. 52, p. 2277, from Billie Hardy, Arlington, TX, March 1991] The court record in 1809 for John Polks settlement which states Nancy "Widow" of John Polk who died 1809 York, South Carolina. This Nancy Polk was pregnant with a son John Armstead Polk and was born Dec 1809. As per his will "my unborn son John Armstead Polk". This family is next seen in Nashville Tennessee. (Sumner). There has never been a document that John Polk of Maury County Tennessee was married to Elizabeth "Alderson" or that Elizabeth was a daughter of Benedict Alderson. As a matter of fact Benedict Alderson had a daughter named "Nancy" Alderson b: ?? who married a John Polk, it could be the widow "Nancy" Polk who appeared in a Carolina court house in 1809, with a witness "James" Polk Jr. (Bill Polk of Missouri says it was not James Polk but another man Potts). I believe researchers have decided since they could not make "Nancy" work, John Polk of Maury's wife, "Elizabeth", must be Nancy Elizabeth Alderson. The children of Benedict Alderson are born from abt 1770 James C to Jeremiah 1780. John Polk who was the husband of Benedict Aldersons daughter Nancy died in 1809, this Nancy has morphed into Elizabeth Nancy Alderson b: abt 1767 who was married to John of Maury. This is not so, this Nancy Polk had a son, John Armstead Polk b: 1809 who ends up in Leon, Texas. Ezekiel surveyed and granted 5000 acres of land on Carters Creek, Maury County (originally Williamson County). Parts of this land were deeded to his immediate relatives where they settled. (See above) The John Polk who died in York, South Carolina was well documented as being born in 1774 and dying in 1809. Most researchers believe this was the son of Ezekiel Polk but one researcher who reviewed the 1805 estate papers of John Polk in Robertson County, Tennessee, and stated he believed the information proves that the man who died in Robertson is John Polk, Ezekiel Franklins son. Polks of York are definitely affiliated with the Aldersons, the Aldersons of Sumner County (Greater Nashville area) this family is associated with John Polk but not John of Maury. Taylor Polk b: 1780 appears to be the same man who shows up in Stewart Co. Tennesse who some say traveled through Nashville ? James Cole Alderson of Sumner County Tennessee was the son of Jeremiah Alderson and Rebecca Susan Cole. This James registered to pay taxes in Sumner Co, TN, 1810. James' will was probated in Roane Co, TN, 4 March 1811. In this Will the witness is John Polk and his wife Jane. A researcher believes Jane is not John Polks wife but the wife of the deceased, this explanation is hard for me to accept. Jeremiah and Rebecca did have a daughter Elizabeth D. Alderson but she was born in abt 1780. All these individuals are from York Co., South Carolina with the John Polk and Eleanor who most researchers want to believe is John Polk of Maury's family, but these people are in Sumner "Greater Nashville" and at the time, John Polk of Maury is on Carters Creek in Maury County, Tennessee (1806 Deed), and they are not John Polk of Maury or his brothers and sisters. Notable Southern families by Armstrong states John Polk Jr. son of John Polk and grandson of William Polk/MT was born in 1762 ? I have not totally worked it out yet but Captain Charles Polk' 1800 household has 2 males over 16 and 3 females which could be John Polk of Maury and wife (Elizabeth? or Ester Pool) with son Benjamin. The 1790 household of Captain Charles Polk has 2 males over 16, 3 males under 16 and 3 females. 2nd wife Phillopena. Captain John Polk married Mary Alexander b: 1767 and accidentally shot her, this couple were married 1787. This woman was the Grandaughter of William and Ester Sample. Some researchers denied it was John and stated it was actually Charles Jr. Polk who married and shot this woman. This information is hard to interpret but can be studied from the information if you research the Alexanders of Mecklenburg. Signers of "Mecklenburg Independance" Who was the John Jr. Polk in the 1790 Census of Mecklenburg, North Carolina? I do not know but it was not John Polk of Maury. John Polk and Elizabeth's first child Benjamin was the only child born before the 1790 census. Benjamin of Maury, Benjamin "DA", never was documented using the initials "DA", "A" on a military record but not " DA". John Polk of Maury had 5 sons and 2 daughters, Evan, Franklin, Nancy and Elizabeth all reflect being born in North Carolina as recorded later in the census records not "South Carolina" and not "Virginia". Robert A. John and Benjamin died or disappeared prior to those questions being asked for the record. Benjamin of Maury is said to have died in San Augustine, Texas. Benjamin of Maury and Benjamin of Bedford are equally qualified to fit this person either could be inserted as the right Benjamin "inconclusive" Researchers have claimed John Polk of Maury had a son Robert Polk born in 1792 yet the census and analysis of my own ancestor, Robert A. Polk indicates he was born between 22 Sep 1800 and 10 Apr 1801 and died 4 Aug 1840, Robert A Polk married Lavenia Partee b: abt 1802 Granville, North Carolina she was the daughter of Abner Partee and Granddaughter of Col. Charles Partee. Did John Jr Polk have a son Robert born in 1792 ? I do not know. The "Ensign" Robert Polk which is included in Buells "History of Andrew Jackson", takes place in New Orleans on Jan of 1815 which means Robert Polk of Maury was at best 15 years old. ( I do not think it was Robert of Maury) and Buell stated he was a young curly haired boy of nineteen or twenty and was the nephew of Captain Charles Polk (StewartCo., Tn.) The other part of the story states Jackson stood among the ranks of the Tennessee company led by Captain Charles Polk. According to the denied Revolutionary pension claim of Charles Polk of San Augustine, Texas, self proclaimed son of Captain John Polk and disputed brother of my John Polk of Maury. Again the Polk family of Bedford has a Robert Polk {Pollock} the right age to be civil Charleys Nephew represented in the above. In an 1812 census of revolutionary soldiers for Maury County, pioneers who were soldiers of the Revolution included were Ezekiel Polk and John Polk. It seems impossible John Polk of Maury could have been a Captain in the revolution, at the age of 16, perhaps a captain of a County militia in North Carolina or Tennessee ? As previously stated his youngest son, Franklin A. Polk was born in North Carolina 10 Oct 1804. This prior to his uncle Ezekiel deeding him 170 acres on carters creek, Maury County in 1806. Nancy Anne Polk, who was the daughter of John Polk of Maury passed down through her descendants a pin which was inscribed "Captain" John Polk, this was not something issued to Revolutionary Officers, so it resolves the issue of John of Maury being too young to be a captain in the Revolution. Just a revolutionary soldier. My ancestor, William Jerome Doris Spence co-author of "History of Hickman County" states Ezekiel, William and John Polk, are part of the the original surveying team in 1784. Issac Shelby governor of Kentucky, son of General Evan Shelby had the task of allocating certain Tennessee lands and chose who would be in the surveying party, it was only natural these Polk men came into great fortune through their kinship. If my John was the son of the above mentioned John in the survey team why did he not give his son John surveyed land? this does not make sense to me. Ezekiel, General Thomas and his son William were flush with this land and William bragged about owning thousands of Acres in Tennessee. I think Ezekiels brother John settled in Kentucky and his son John Jr., brother of Captain Charles of Stewart was the family with records from Stewart County as it related to Civil Charley Polk and his son Benjamin of Stewart County, but this is mere speculation, not enough research on this family. Captain Charles Polk of Stewart was said to have come to Stewart county prior to 1800, this according to the History of Stewart County, Tennessee. There was a Charles Polk living adjacent to John, Eleanor and Taylor in York County as of the 1800 census. Most researchers have not been able to answer the question of "devil" John Polk, said to have lived in the Greenbrier Dist. of Virginia and nobody has ever proven this through the documentation trail. Bedford Polks ? The marriage of unknown Ester Pool, said wife of John Polk b: 7 Nov 1766 and son of Captain Charles Polk b: 13 Oct 1732, causes an unknown gap between marriage in 1787 and move to Tennessee by 1806. Did John of Maury marry 3 times: Ester Pool, Elizabeth ?, Rebecca Briggs. There is a possibility Elizabeth Polk's father was William Poole of Granville, North Carolina who had a daughter Elizabeth Pool who researchers claim was born abt 1768. There are 2 Pool heads of household in Maury County who are documented as pioneers, John Petty Pool and William Pool Williamsport Maury Co., Tennessee 1820 Census. No document that I am aware of says John Polk, son of John Polk /es was born between 24 May 1766 and 24 May 1767 John Polk b: abt 1770 of Bedford County Tennesse is an alternative for John Polk son of John Polk and Eleanor Shelby ( See 1820, 1830 and 1840 census ) he had sons Robert, Benjamin, John Jr. and possibly Charles T ) the daughters of this John Polk are unknown to me. The will of Thomas Shelby and Hannah was filed in the Maury County Wills and settlement book c-1, The speculation would be if Thomas Shelby was the father of Nelly who married Charles Polk son of Captain Charles Polk b: 1732 and lived nearby his brother John Polk b: 1766 there must be a good chance John Polk is the son of Captain Charles Polk. So Far John Polk of Maury County, who died 24 May 1845 and was 78 years old fits the birthdate of 7 Nov 1766. -------------- From DAR Magazine, Vol. 47, No. 2. pg. 76, article entitled "Revolutionary Records," the following: "......during the Revolution he [John Polk] was Captain of a Rifles Company of Volunteers, which served at the mouth of Cape Fear River, and also at Charleston, S. C.......During the Revolution, while he lived only eight miles from Charlotte, N. C., it was just over the line in the Catawba Reservation in S. C., and during the Revolution he commanded a company made up mostly of Indians, under Gen. Sumpter, being engaged in the New River fight and others. After the Revolution he moved to Tennessee, where he lived the rest of his life." If Robert Polk was awarded an Indian agent position after the Battle of New Orleans where he was supposedly standing side by side with Captain Charles Polk, Tomahawk in hand as Buell wrote. It shows that maybe his father had Indian agent connections. I understand this is merely an unproven event but it is curious. And again the Bedford Polk family has a Robert Polk that fits the 1792 birth date. Looking for Captain Charles Polk descendants to compare notes and information. Work in progress !
