Vivian,
I can offer you an opinion of who this Elsie Polk was. The death cert. for her son Willis T. Thompson clearly shows his mother as Elsie Polk. On the other hand, the death cert. for her son Joel Thompson shows his mother as Elsie Mangum. Elsie's death cert. as Elsie Fink does not show her parents. There is no Elsie Polk (or anything similar to that surname) in the 1860 or 1870 census, NC. Elsie's age is all over the place from as early as c1855 birth to as late as c1870, depending on which census one reviews for her. Elsie just does not show in a NC. census under the given name Elsie that I can find. I have traced Elsie and her two husbands through all census from 1880 through 1930. She is shown as Elsie in all census, or something close, she is "Alsie L." in the 1900 census; except for 1910. What I find interesting is she is shown as Margaret Thompson in the 1910 census. Did the informant on the death cert. for Joel Thompson give the wrong name, perhaps that information meant the mother of Joel was Elsie Margaret vs. Elsie Magnus (the name Magnus is quite clear, and I have assumed this was a surname, but this surname is out of sync with anything else for this family). Now, here is my opinion. Andrew H. Polk, b. b. 15 Oct 1826, Mecklenburg Co., NC., d. 7 Nov 1892, Union Co., NC., and Andrew's wife, Louisa Elizabeth Helms, b. 1828, NC., d. 1 Sep 1906, NC., had a daughter named Margaret Polk who was b. 1861-1862, Union Co., NC., and who I have never found anything on (last record was 1870 census). This 1861-1862 birth matches well with the age of 17 for Elsie Thompson, wife of Ebinezer Thompson, 1880 census. In the 1930 census, Elsie Fink says she first married at age 16. She was married in 1880 per the 1880 census (mark indicating married during the census year), so we have some fairly close events here.
If you have any information about the burial of Elsie Fink, what cemetery, etc., you might try to match that up with where Andrew Polk and wife are buried (Shiloh Baptist Cemetery, Union Co., NC.), or see if there are any Polks in the cemetery where Elsie Fink is buried.
I know the Polks of NC., pretty well, and this Elsie Polk (under that name) just does not match up with the Polks, so I am thinking she used a different given name at times. I wonder about that initial of "L" as used in the 1900 census. Maybe she was Margaret L. "Elsie" Polk. Of course, there is always the possibility that she was not a Polk at all (Duke is another surname that rings no bells in Polks of the area, and I have nothing on that surname in connection with the Thompsons that I could find), but her not being a Polk is doubtful, that surname Polk did not come out of the blue on Willis' death cert. Hope this helps. I would appreciate any information you might find on matching Elsie with a Polk family; I like to keep them straight. Bill Polk, Kansas City, MO.
