Hi, Ned and interested parties There is no doubt that various Alexanders and Polks were connected/associated, in NC., in Cecil Co., MD., and in Somerset Co., MD., and likely back in Ireland. However, sorting the Alexanders into families, and figuring which ones of the many similar given names are associated with this or that Polk can be nightmarish, been there/done that. And one simply cannot, without proof, and using posting material (because so much of the posted material is either outright wrong, or is not documented, most of it being copied from poster to poster) state that William Polk who m. Margaret Taylor is associated with the Somerset Polks because of these family connections. Probable = yes - proven = no. I just don't want any readers here to get the wrong idea of what these connections mean. Such association may lead to ancestry information for William Polk who m. Margaret Taylor, but I have yet to find anything to tie him to Alexanders of Somerset Co., MD., (or lower (Northampton) Virginia, where there were Alexanders, also), or to the other Polks of Somerset Co., MD. I tend to think such association of William Polk's family with the Alexanders may be back in Ireland, not via the Somerset Polks, but that is but a guess. I won't speak for John Fleming Polk here except to say that he has done some work on Alexander/Polk connections, also, and if he wants to chime in on this, I am sure all of us would welcome the input. On that land record in Cecil Co., MD. - I do not know for sure that the William Pollock who bought land in Cecil Co., MD., is William Polk who m. Margaret Taylor. I think the best we can do on this record is say that probably this is the same man. I do not know who the David Alexander was who sold the land (John Fleming Polk may know him); or maybe someone else out there does know who he is (proven, not info from some published account without (substantiation) and will post on this forum. I wish I knew who this Mr. Polk who m. an Alexander female was. If we could figure that out, such info might help a lot on untangling the Mecklenburg Polks (the unknown few there). This unknown daughter marrying a Polk (or similar name) sure has a familiar ring to it - An unknown daughter of Andrew Linn, Sr., married a Polk or Pope or similar name and went to NC. I get suspicious of information when the data starts sounding similar, makes me wonder what basis there is for such info. Susan Polk, daughter of William Polk/Margaret Taylor, did marry Benjamin Alexander, and from what I have been able to trace of Benjamin Alexander's line, his parents were Andrew Alexander/Jean(or Jane) McNitt, and the grandparents were Samuel Alexander/Mary Taylor and the greatgrandparents were James Alexander/Mary Maxwell, this couple supposedly the parents of John Alexander, b. c1662, the John Alexander you were mentioning (possibly), Ned, but I have done no work on him. I can state that there is a lot of material out there on John Alexanders, some of it intermingled, so one must tread carefully in separating these men. Bottom line - We know the Alexanders and Polks are associated all along, but taking a particular Polk, namely William Polk who m. Margaret Taylor, back to the Somerset Co., MD., cannot be accomplished with the presently known information. Bill Polk, Kansas City, MO. Notify Administrator about this message?
